JJ hasn't been too sharp the last three nights. Still, things didn't quite break his way tonight. I think McLouth could have caught Giambi's double, and the attempt at the inning-ending DP was not the smoothest I've seen. JJ got two grounders, like he wanted with the DP in order, but the O's couldn't quite turn them. It really wasn't that horrible of an outing IMO.

You forgot leads the majors in saves as well. If you are gonna put in bad stats dont forget the good.

Nobody else with 17+ saves has more than 3 blown saves. He has more saves because he has more opportunities. The three closers right behind him in saves only have 1 blown save. Also, out of the top 30 pitchers in saves, he is 21st in WAR.

I'm not trying to bash JJ. I do not care who is blowing these saves. It's not a personal thing. But it is a real problem. The O's should be the top team in the AL but they are instead 3.5 back because their closer has 6 losses, 5 blown saves, and goes out there and throws a "stinker" way too often for a closer. It's costing them valuable games and ultimately could cost them a playoff berth.

He walked the first batter by not being close to the strike zone. The double was hit off the wall (i.e., hard...regardless of whether a tremendous defensive play maybe, possibly, could have snared it). And if you, as a closer, have to rely on the double play to get yourself out of a jam that you created...then, yes, you're having a pretty terrible night.

Nate hasn't been too great lately. JJ wasn't as bad tonight as some think but that doesn't make people happy.

Agree with you, but...just can't walk the leadoff guy. Far and away the thing that infuriates me the most about baseball.

Had two walks last night as well. His stuff is fine but the command is a little off right now.

Right bc he kept all his pitches down and had great command.

Sure had ALL the symptoms of a tired arm.

JJ hasn't had good command, and/or been able to keep his pitches down since the beginning of the playoffs last year.

I'm with you. The leadoff walk killed him because he then tried to get ahead of Giambi and grooved one. But really, Giambi's ball was the only ball hit hard in the inning. As you said, he then calmed down and got the groundballs, but we just couldn't get two. Obviously not a good outing, but it wasn't as horrible as the other posters have made it seem. I don't know if Nate could have caught that ball, but I do think Manny should have gone home on the grounder to him.

    • he's not a TOR guy...and never will be.
    • The Verlander trade requires taking on a lot of money and then doing an extension for an older pitcher. And then that older pitcher missed a season with that team (and making a big salary) due to TJ. Are you comfortable with taking those kinds of risks? Oh, the OP was about extensions. No? I guess you are against all long term deals? If so, that is fine. I just have a difference of opinion.
    • The pitching matchups, I have an eye on of if we skip Irvin and throw Grayson on Sunday. Without a change, Grayson would naturally get the Monday-Sunday next week, and miss the ensuing Monday-Thursday Yankees showdown. I think we generally want more Grayson and less Irvin, including against the Yankees, right? The other path would be to let him gas up extra after the Monday turn, and a home series vs. Oak isn't a bad scenario for a spot start.
    • With Elias and Rubenstein across the negotiating table Boras will know he is up against experts in talent evaluation and financial risk evaluation respectively.  This won’t be Buck circumventing Dan to convince Peter to pay his “big hairy guy” Chris Davis.  Parameters will be established and plan B’s will be in place to implement should Elias and Rubenstein choose to walk away from the table.  That being said discussions with Henderson should be the priority play with the Rutschman discussions happening concurrently but at a slower roll.   I don’t think you want Rutschman finding out that Henderson has been approached by the O’s first.
    • I think he will be absolutely for that…but I also don’t think he has to for reasons I have stated in the past.
    • Well first of all, I think you are making the mistake that you have to trade high end assets to get good players.  That isn’t true (see Verlander) Secondly, as you continue to build good farm systems and develop good players, you can’t play them all. Trades have to be made. It’s a perfect use of resources. We aren’t talking about extensions. We are talking about big FA deals and yes, there is something wrong with it because those contracts largely blow up in your face.  It’s an awful use of resources and that has been proven time and time again. Just because the guy has had a good career the first 7-10 years doesn’t mean that it will continue to be as good.  Don’t get lured in by the name. The name doesn’t matter, the production does.
    • Is that your preference OR what you think Elias will do?
