Buck

Why? We haven't played well in the last week and we're still right in the thick of things. Also, we get some guys back in the next few weeks including Chen, who was our best starter when he went out. I think it's going to be a fun summer. Unfortunately, we're going to have nights like this now and again.

Why, because our pitching stinks, period.

Back to Buck (this other stuff has been debated a ton in other threads within the last 24 hours), I think he's pretty agitated right now. The pitching is struggling, minor league depth has been weaker than advertised, officiating has been bad, etc. I'm sure Buck is frustrated. Also, the old Buck was a fairly *****ly guy. The new Buck seemed to learn to be more mild mannered during his ESPN stint. He's still an intense guy but with a smoother exterior. I'm sure he wants to go crazy every now and then.

I also think Buck may be testier because expectations for the team are higher. Last year everyone was just pretty damned happy to have a winning record and be in the race, and even though Buck always said the team's expectations were much higher than that, there had to be some sense that there season was being highly succesful compared to anyone's realistic expectations going into the season. This year, even though a lot of pundits predicted the Orioles would fall back, and many fans and posters agreed with that, there's no doubt that expectations were much higher than last year. So, Buck may be a little frustrated that the team has been good, but not as good as he'd hoped and expected to this point. And, the team hasn't won every extra inning game, every one-run game, and protected every lead the way they did last year, so there's just more reason to be a little frustrated.

Sorry, and I know I'm in the absolute minority here but I flat out just don't care for Showalter. I don't see him as being smoother. I see him as gruff and not a very pleasant guy. He seems to enjoy intimidating the press/media if an in-game move is questioned and it irks me that the press/media prefers to fawn all over him rather than press him. I think the fan base has put him up on a pedestal and it has gotten to his head. I thought his antics during the game in which he was ejected the other day were embarrassing. He's no Weaver, Lou Piniella or Billy Martin. That's for sure.

Fire at will.

Yeah, can't understand why the fans would put him up on a pedestal after he helped turn around a moribund franchise and led us to both a winning record and the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. Can't understand that at all.

Not to mention that his players have an obvious respect and like of the guy...

Totally ok if you don't like him. I have no problem with that. But I just don't see the bolded at all. I don't watch every post game presser, but when I do I don't see this at all. Buck always seems polite but firm with the media and always very, very supportive of his players. IMO, he attempts to focus on the positive. I have never seen him insult a member of the media. I think the press treats him with respect because he treats them with respect and he's not a hysterical guy. I see a guy who is pretty secretive and who has a strategy for trying to get the most out of his players for the entire 162 game schedule. Part of that strategy is showing support for the players when talking to the media and part of the strategy is investing playing time and trust in players, even when they struggle.

I desperately wanted Buck to get hired a few years ago. I remember him being one of ~5 candidates, all of whom had some fan support. I was thrilled he came here and I'm still thrilled to have him.

I absolutely think Buck is frustrated. Just like us. The team is underachieving a little. Some players are having great seasons but when you watch what's going on it's hard not to think they should be 12-15 games over .500. There have been injuries but not really more than other teams. The umpiring has been awful this year, and while the O's have benefited a few times, we really have had some ridiculous stuff go against us.

For me... The guys are not patient at the plate. The starters struggle to go more than 5 innings. The bullpen has regressed. They walk too many hitters. Jones has misplayed several balls, a few of which cost us dearly. Gausman and Bundy are exactly where we didn't want them (getting shelled and getting major surgery). And so on. This is a better team than last year yet it's winning less than the 2012 team did in the second half. Hopefully this group gets hot after the AS break like last year.

I think we should all thank GOD that Bobby V and Joe G. turned the job down.

I think Buck is a fantastic manager and can't believe all the hatred on this forum.

Maybe Buck is annoyed that Matt Wieters is in the middle of his 4th full season and is hitting .226. I am annoyed that Wieters is a Bust but I am even more annoyed that the Orioles got shut down by Scott Kazmir....the same Scott Kazmir that was out of baseball in 2011 and 2012.

Who has been pitching very well the last couple of weeks. 3 GS, 2 QS, 16.7 innings, 3.20, 5 BBs and 13 KOs.

They even mentioned about his pitching well during the pregame talk.

    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
