I think Dan Duquette has done a great job, but...

If finding value on the International Market means finding guys like Gonzo, Henry U. and EdRod then I'm all for it.

Not picking on you Gordo since a lot of posters are doing it but I personally don't consider Gonzo an international signing. He spent five seasons in the MiLB. To me there is little difference between him being discovered in the Mexican Leagues or being signed off an Independent league team like Lew Ford was.

If we had signed Yoenis Cespedes everyone would complaining about what a terrible signing it was on the board every day after the season he is having.

Wow, I hadn't even realized how much Cespedes had struggled until you posted this and I looked him up. .225/.293/.420. I guess he needs to face some pitchers who throw at batting practice speed!

Every advanced statistical metric suggests Cespedes has been unlucky thus far, and he can expect to be very productive in the second half. He'll likely wind up with 27+ homers, 80+ RBI's, and an .800+ OPS. He'll still be easily outperforming his contract.

Do you seriously think that would stop people from blasting the signing were he an Oriole?

Oh, you think the budget SHRUNK under DD?

Come now. That's laughable.

The budget is what the front office has made it. Dan simply spent what money was available in ways that he thought would have a higher impact before 2018. A reasonable approach. 16 year old Dominicans can have a big upside. But they usually can't contribute for five years even if the do hit. And in cases like David Ortiz, ten years. For another organization. The PED scandal will take some more bloom off the DR Rose.

So what is he doing differently than AM? Which was my point.

Although not signing some of the high bonus guys, isn't it pretty well documented that he's deployed more scouts to more areas?

Not as I recall.

Unless you mean getting us booted from S Korea.

I'm not complaining what DD is doing. But I'm saying, by and large, he's doing just what AM did.

Well we could resolve this issue if we knew how many international signings DD has made since he has been here, and how many occurred under AM. Do you know?

Since Gonzalez was not an international signing, and Urrutia was old enough to be considered an actual free agent, It would be a difficult task.

    • Tonight not so much.
    • Frustrating moment for Gausman (and his roto owners), he's closing in on 5 shutout innings but 1B Vlad seems to more or less just plain miss the throw from the 3B on a routine groundout two outs, man on 2nd to let run #1 in.  Maikel Garcia bloop, Bobby Witt doubles, and he's losing 3-2.
    • Hanging is too good for him.
    • I trained owned race horses for 25 years.  100s and 100s of them.   From bringing up and breaking yearlings who never raced and then racing them as a 2 and 3 year old.....to older war horses who raced 400 times and you keep them together and racing with everything under the kitchen sink.   One thing that as a race horse trainer was very easy to see, from the get go, was where to classify your horse as a yearling/maiden.  In  other words a horse who had either never raced or who had never won a race as a 2 and 3 year old.  Some horses show a lot of ability at the farm when training, but then when you get them to the actual races then are just too green.  Which means inexperienced.   They have no idea what they or doing or how to race.    I equate JH to this.   He has shown all kinds of ability on the farm....but when he got to the real deal he was completely over matched.  He looks like a HS player. When that happens with a race horse?  We race them at easier race tracks against less talented horses to get their feet wet.   To get their confidence.  I think we all, me included, way over rated JH's ability to perform at the ML level so early.   He needs to go back to the farm, grow up a little because he looks like a little kid, and come back when he has matured.
    • this start? I'm talking about last start. every ball was crushed.
    • Sorry I forgot about the demographics on this board 🤣.  I’ll do better next time.
