I think this had an effect on Gausman's role in September. I really thought we'd see him back for the last month of the year playing a key role out of the pen down the stretch. But I guess the more power arms the better.

I like it. Keeps us from overusing ODay and Hunter. Lets Matusz focus on being LOOGY. and is big insurance for Johnson. Buck's going to love having another option.

You keep saying this. /QUOTE]

Who replaces him?

I keep saying that? I don't think I have said that before. If we trade for an "under the radar" starter like the other poster mentioned, Hammel is the obvious one to get rid of. He is the weak link in the rotation. We'll see how it goes tonight, I made that post when he loaded the bases in the 1st.

I like it. It's a upgrade for the bullpen. Hunter has been having some issues so why not get another decent arm.

I don't care about his personal life. If he can help win win games I'm happy. Maybe he can pick up a few saves while here.

I rather not see Gausman as an reliever.

Maybe the most important part about this trade that we've overlooked is how taking him off the market impacts our competition.

K-Rod is one of the best relief pitchers in baseball this year (on the surface) and teams like the Rays and Tigers have some question marks in the bullpen. In a pennant race, and even more so in the playoffs, those question marks get exposed. He would have been a big "get" for them. Meanwhile, adding him gives us (maybe) the best bullpen in baseball.

I must be one of the few who really like this trade. This gives us, arguably, the best bullpen in baseball. One of the biggest reasons for our success last year was such a strong bullpen, so I see no harm in replicating that, especially with what should be an improved starting staff compared to last year.

As far as giving up Delmonico? So what? He's a mediocre prospect, and every system has their own Delmonico. He's shown power and plate discipline, but he's done that at A+ ball - still a long way to go until he is in the majors.

Meanwhile, you look at the 3B position, and I think it's safe to say we have that locked down for the foreseeable future. Odds are in the remainder of this season, K-Rod will put up more value for us than Delmonico will in his entire professional career.

My thoughts exactly. It's amazing how Delmonico all of a sudden became the heir apparent to Brooks Robinson as soon as he gets traded.

    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
    • How did the moustache work for Austin Hays?
    • Thanks for the kind words @HbgOsFan and thanks especially for reading them.
