Angels getting more return on their ridiculous investment.

The Los Angeles Angel slugger has a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Friday's 6-4 loss to Oakland.

Post Plantar fasciotomy here, which is what Albert basically did on his own if I understand it correctly. Personally (and I understand I don't have access to the medical treatments he does) I am worse after the surgery then before and it is a constant issue when playing sports. I actually do hope he recovers and is able to play again, but it can be debilitating.

I do believe Shannon Stewart's career was ended by the same thing. That is looking like an amazingly bad contract now.

Getting old sucks. Especially when you are probably four years older than your listed age. Angels deserve all the bad karma they can get for going on this ridiculous spending spree that raised the prices on all players.

Yup.

And the baseball gods are angry at Albert as well. The man was a Cardinal. He should have remained there and finished out his career. His greed is being paid back, karma style.

And for the record, I have been and still am a HUGE fan of Albert. He's been on my fantasy team since he came in the league, and I just plain like the dude. But he did the Cards wrong, and I think these things have a way of working themselves out.

I don't know likely it is that Pujols lied about his age, as he went to high school and community college in the U.S. However, according to Wikipedia, he was walked 55 times in protest his senior year because opposing coaches didn't believe he was 18.

I wholeheartedly agree that the Angels are getting what they deserve, though. Nothing against Pujols, but that contract made no sense.

He did the Cards a huge favor. They are certainly not missing him and even with a "team friendly" deal he would be making big money.

Isn't this better for the Cardinals this way? They haven't missed a beat. Got another first round pick. And aren't burdened by his salary.

It worked out great for the Cards. I guess Dipper is saying he wants Pujols to be punished, in addition to the Cards being OK.

I don't quite get how or why he would have pretended to be much younger than he was while he was in high school. If he was so good as a senior that everyone thought he was 22, wouldn't his career have been better served being in AA or AAA then? Something seems a little off, but I don't quite get what it is.

I think they assumed that they'd be taken to the cleaners the last few years of the deal. They just made the mistake tons of people have made before and assumed that their guy was going to be the one who aged better than almost anyone else. I mean, c'mon, he's Albert Pujols, even if he declines twice as fast as average he'll be pretty darned good at 40, right? Right?

    • Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the O’s have been in contact with each of Josh Hader, Jordan Hicks, Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman. All four hurlers fit the general profile of a late-inning arm, although they’re clearly in different tiers of free agency. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/orioles-have-shown-interest-in-josh-hader-jordan-hicks.html He thinks Milwaukee will not move Burnes, he also confirmed that the Orioles wanted Cease at the deadline and they are the best match for him.
    • If Mateo or Urias can improve our #5 rotation spot, sure.  Matz could be a fit if we see a path to improvement.  And if he has any options left. But a trade for a #5 doesn’t scratch the itch. I tend to think Urias/Mateo will bring a low level lottery.  Or they are part of a package.
    • The O's go into ST with Wells, Hall, Irvin and whoever they acquire competing for the 5th starter position.   Wells is going to be the best coming out of ST in all probability. Hall in high leverage spot in the pen.  Irvin in long relief.
    • Generous? You are aware that multiple players have hit the 10M mark as an Arb 1 right?
    • Its a low risk scenario, so we may grab someone to get a look at them in spring training, but I don't expect the Orioles to keep anyone on the roster. There just isn't space.  The bullpen may have a spot or two open, but several arms are lacking options and a Rule-5 guy wouldn't be able to be sent down. Elias (and most teams) like to have at least a spot or two that can be used to shuttle guys up and down in case of overwork. I don't see a guy worth taking a spot like that on a team that just won 101 games.
    • Why not try and snag an arm in the rule 5?  Not glamorous enough?  What relievers are drafted/signed and turned to relievers before AA/AAA ball?  Ben Joyce?  So everyone is a failed SP. Either because of injury or performance. So why not take a flier on an arm when upper level pitching depth is a weakness of our org? We might never guess the player, but I think we can see that RH P is a need for us at the top of the system. The Yankees have a nasty bullpen. If they’ve been delaying converting a SP to a reliever then we should be all over that. That’s not being poor. That’s being smart, but we are poor.
