Brian Roberts

Indulging in some gallows's humor with Roberts' and Reimold's injury history is a far cry from mocking.

You're setting a pretty high bar for what is or isn't mockery. I definitely think that Roberts was ridiculed and talked about in very scornful terms.

I confess. I never believed that Brian Roberts could stay healthy. Let alone play at a league average level. And I did mock his production during his current contract. I never wanted him to be in that dark, dark, place that he found himself after self injuring twice. It must have been awful for him and those close to him.

The posts I remember most vividly are the ones cynically accusing Roberts about taking his millions and pretending that he was hurt too badly to play, about not caring about what happened to the O's. Anyone who denies the existence of those posts is indulging in highly selective memory, I.e., lying. Those posts went beyond criticism and mockery. Black humor and mockery was sometimes the nicest treatment he received.

Now let's hear the defenders of that behavior talk about how a chat board is a place where passionate fans can express their opinions and vent.

Bravo! The truth, pointedly expressed.

I freely admitted there were some crackpot posters out there. I took umbrage at the idea that "many posters mocked" Roberts. Maybe I am just old and thick skinned but making a quip about Roberts or Reimold and the DL, or a joke about Wieters being slow isn't mocking in my book.

Mocking- to attack or treat with ridicule, contempt, or derision.

I don't think the over/under till DL joke was any of the above.

I agree with this.

The only thing that we didn't see in the derision of Roberts was an actual poll, like we saw here with Tommy Hunter:

I pretty much stayed away from commenting on Roberts while he was out, mainly because I was against signing him to a four-year deal and it just seemed like it would be piling on. I never thought he was dogging it, and I'm happy for him that he has been able to play and contribute. He does get some key hits, but overall his contribution isn't outstanding. Some people seem to take it as a sign that "he's back" when he gets a big hit or turns a good play, but you don't need a scout's eye or a ream of statistics to see he is not the player he used to be.

    • Not just WS contenders, but most Playoff contenders will be looking for bullpen upgrades as the deadline nears....if we're being honest with ourselves, if 70% of the teams have a shot at the playoffs, and the other 30% only have a handful (combined) of quality arms they might consider dealing, we should expect to have to pay a Kings Ransom to outbid those that are competing with us for the talent.  And, therein lies the problem.....we won't get a fair and reasonable deal by Hangout standards, it will have to be an overpay, or we settle for another Flaherty type.  That's just the reality folks. My point  being, be prepared to be disappointed that we had to give up too much, or we didn't get who we really wanted.
    • He's obviously cooling off some, I don't think anyone believed he would be 1.000+ OPS guy with a .350 BA. Strikeouts are 30% but he did take 3 walks yesterday if memory serves. I've slept since that game.

    • This probably didn't need its own thread but I didn't really know what existing thread to post it in. I am the only person who has recognized Roch's strange promotion/fascination/affection for Brian McKenna. He mentions him regularly in his blog as a potential call up. Rings the bell about his plus defense and speed and that he'd be a RHH off the bench. He had several blog posts last year about him missing the clinching games, and so on and so forth. It just seems a little weird that a guy who hung on as the 26th man on bad teams and is dropped from the 40 man and clears waivers when the team gets good, keeps coming up in blog posts and would be sought out for opinions and quotes so often. Just seems a little odd to me.    Roch's 4/25 Blog Post   In McKenna’s favor were his speed, defense at every outfield spot and energy in the dugout. A team-first guy and positive clubhouse influence. And he had a strong, vocal supporter in manager Brandon Hyde. But McKenna went 5-for-37 in camp, the numbers mattering more for him than others, and running dry on options didn’t allow him to immediately stay.
