Fascinating story from Verducci! When Hardy was young he'd work out with his father. Dad would use a Magic Marker to color half the baseball black. JJ would make throws to first and try to keep the black on one side and the white on the other. If the ball started looking gray then he was getting sidespin. Have to throw it straight overhand to make it work.

I used to do sorta the same thing playing pool, 9-ball. I'd spend hours practicing playing against myself. I'd use the 10 ball for the cue ball. I could see the spin better that way.
