I wish every penny of increased revenue was used to improve the team and the fan experience. That is not usually how things work here in America,

Not asking for 100% of every dollar of increased revenue be used to improve the team, but if the payroll hangs in the vicinity of $100M, it appears that only a nickel or two of each incremental revenue dollar is being put into the team.

Our owner deserves to make as much $ on the Orioles and related investments as he wants. I don't begrudge him making $ on these investments. IMO, and I believe in statements made by PA, the relationship of PA and the team and the city was that PA was more of a civic caretaker supporting the team, but he looks less like that and more greedy with every financial disclosure that is made public.

I think this is the key. It's not really the money. These rich guys see themselves as caretakers or stewards. They are successful because they know how to manage things well and turn a profit. So why shouldn't they manage everything, they know what's best? The world would be a better place if they were in charge. And actually they are. But PA also feels he must represent the interests of his fellow shareholders. If they were to come to him as a group and ask to raise the payroll and cut their profits a bit, he'd probably do it.. But they seem to be happy with the way things are.

As someone who as defended PA a good bit the past 10+ years, I will say that if our payroll only goes up into the $105M range that I could lead a group with pitchforks demanding an explanation of the club's finances.

PA is benefiting from increased attendance, increased MASN viewership, presumably better advertising $, and the new National TV contract. We don't have access to the books, but it increasingly appears that PA has a very high minimum profit bar on the Os (like $25M annually) or there is something the rest of the world is just plain missing regarding the Os cost structure.

It is becoming more difficult to reach any conclusion other than PA is pocketing a boatload of $ annually off both MASN and the Orioles and is not investing in the team.

I won't argue that I would love to see a higher payroll. However, considering Peter is approaching his mid 80's, his mind set may be "Set my family up for life" rather than "spend an extra $20 million a year in HOPES that the Orioles get marginally better."

When your net worth starts with a "B" your family is already set up for life.

Pretty sure Pete's family is already set for life. I think he feels it's his responsibility to see that the team is run efficiently. And we need to remember the profits aren't just his, they are his and his fellow shareholders'.

This is a great point. Everybody who always bashes Angelos forgets that he is looking out for his partners as well. And to my knowledge, not a single one of the minority owners of the Orioles has ever dropped out. I guess they are pretty happy with the job ol' Pete is doing.

Not always, look at the Reskins, and Jack Kent Cooke, he was a multi-billionaire, and because of inheritance taxes, the son was not able to keep the Redskins, since they owned their own stadium, this made the cost of the team worth a ton of money.

I am sure they are all still doing just fine.

No doubt, I am not crying tears for them.

But, I know, I would be pissed, if I couldn't keep the family business because of taxes. Oh well.

I could have saved the whole thing in about 3 hours along with his attorney. Same for Joe Robbie. No one to blame but themselves.

    • There were several and I was one them. I'm  on record as saying I was one of his biggest Apologists . You should feel good about yourself as you were able to see that Means would be imploding before our very eyes( which was an opinion or a guess, which is what I did) as far as feeling bad for me? Dont I'm plenty good enough to know I wont be able to guess right every time
    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
