It seems at least likely that Wieters gets traded.

He had a .704 OPS this year and .739 for his career. Two more years of catching 150 games. Is .650 really that extreme a possibility?

Yes, it is extreme. There is a HUGE difference between .704 and .650.

He had an awful year at the plate but he still came with some power and for that, he's always going to have a slugging of .400...do you really see his OBP at .250 or below? C'mon.

According to Olney, the O's tried to strike up extension talks for Wieters in Spring Training 2013 and were flabbergasted by a counter-offer in the range of Joe Mauer's eight-year, $184MM deal with the Twins. Coming off the worst offensive season of his career, the price is likely down, but that contractual demand shows that the two sides "are speaking a different languague in negotiations," as Olney puts it.

Lmao. Nice knowing you, Matt.

This is such a no-brainer to me, I am not sure why all the discussion. Weiters/Boras are asking for 20 mil per. I think Weiters is worth 12-13 a year and it sounds like the O's are around the same number. The disparity is so great that a deal is nearly impossible. He isn't close to as good as Yadier Molina who makes 15mil per.

The time to trade him is now with 2 years left before free agency.

Let's face it guys, Wieters hits pretty much like a backup catcher (Mark Parent anyone?). Weiters hits for a low average and has good power. He is dog slow on the bases and doesn't move runners. His defense just doesn't justify paying FAR above value.

I think it is obvious that no deal that Wieters agrees to while Scott Boras is his agent will be good value for the Orioles ... and that for a mid-market team like the Orioles who can only afford a couple of major contracts, Wieters will therefore not be with the team after 2015.

The question is, can we add the pieces that we need to make a high-probability run over the next 2 years while this core is in place and then be OK beyond 2015 with just picks replacing Wieters (and for the sake of argument, Davis)? If the answer to either or both of those questions is no, then moving Wieters (higher priority) makes a lot of sense if what comes back helps us significantly after 2016 and hopefully over the next 2 years.

I have to imagine that there is enough of a market for Wieters with 2 years left of control for Duquette to get something like that back for Matt. Therefore, I think he will be gone this offseason. I think Duq can see this for what it is and won't be sitting on his hands playing out the string (with Wieters' and Davis' contracts) unless he is able to somehow make some serious upgrades elsewhere and make this a more competitive team for the next 2 years.

If the reports are true that Wieters is looking for a Joe Mauer deal its not shocking DD is shopping him. I'm a big Wieters fan but a Mauer deal is a joke. At least Mauer has the bat to move to first base now that he can't physically handle catching. Wieters' bat? Ummm, no.

Option A: Trade him after a relatively down year, but while healthy and with 2 years left.

Option B: Hope he stays healthy and productive over the next 2 years and get a pick for him.

Each has risk. What will the O's do?

There's also Option C: Hang onto him for 2014, hope for a bump in production and trade him when he's got one year left.

The best option depends almost entirely on the market.

    • I guess we were watching a different outing.
    • You try to sign long term Gunnar and GR.  Wait and see on the others. As for Adley?   I would not sign him to a long term contract.  I hate to say it because I love the guy but he just does not seem worth what he is going to ask for imo.
    • I am not worried about Means AS LONG AS HE IS HEALTHY.   Big if.  But he knows what he is doing getting ready for what him is his spring training.  If he does this his first 2 starts or so?    Then I worry.
    • I had never seen him in a live at bat until I saw him at his first spring training at bat this year.  And I mean his very first at bat.   He struck out swinging on like 4 pitches and being honest looked completely over matched.  I remember thinking....."hmmmm that seems odd for a guy so highly touted".   He just seemed like he had no idea what he was doing.   But then I never really saw another live at bat from him again all spring training and he ended up doing pretty well.  However every at bat I have seen of him since he got called up?  Looked like that first spring training at bat.  He looks like my wife trying to hit a major league fastball.  He has no idea what he is doing. I have never seen someone so good against minor league players and yet so bad against major league players.  Just a huge discrepancy.   Has to be psychological.   He looks completely intimidated.
    • And who is this somebody other than Means or Flarerty that would help us in the playoffs. Also remember Bradish and Grod did not help us in the Playoffs. So I guess It was unwise to wait on those 2. Plus Bradish is hurt and uncertain going foward( a la Means) Yeah you piled on.
    • I will say I am surprised at how utterly useless/helpless JH looks after he got called up.   Not just surprised. Stunned is a better word. This is not an 7th round pick who struggled for years in the minors.   This is the #1 pick from 2 years ago who has dominated his entire life in the game of baseball. Yet he looks like a player in 8th grade playing against seniors in HS.  He can barely make any contact and even his fielding and throwing is very iffy. It is like he took up the game of baseball within the last year.   A complete novice.   This has to be mental because even the worst of the worst can make more contact than he is.  He is FLAILING.   No way that is all physical.    At this point you send him down.   No questions asked.   I was more than willing to let him get through this if he SHOWED ANY SIGNS of life.  But he just doesn't.   He looks pathetic.    Manny Machado he is not.   Send him down for at least 3 months.   Bring up Mayo.  Or anyone really.  It is better than what he is offering.
