The Brady Workout Season has Begun

Britton had his first workout Tuesday with Orioles vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson in Glendale, Calif. For the past few weeks, Britton had been working out at home with pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, since they live close to each other.

Britton also worked out with Anderson last year, "but this year I should get more benefits out of it," he said.

"These are different workouts than I've ever done before. Last year, I felt a lot was the learning phase of it. Now, I know how to do it the right way, and I think that's going to benefit me more strength-wise."

Maybe additional power and stamina is just what Britton needs to get himself some consistency on the mound.'

Any word on who else is taking on the Brady Regimen?

I know an O's employee is taking Brady's workout to Markakis.

Interesting.

I realize Markakis' family situation makes it imprudent for him to be in Southern California.

I wonder if this employee is a trainer under Brady's tutelage?

Chris Davis: "In Texas, there were maybe four or five guys always in the weight room. Here, there are like 20. One of the reasons I finished as strong as I did last year was the workouts. I came in with some [past] knee issues and was able to run around in the outfield and not have knee problems or anything like that."

Davis also stopped bringing his lunch to the ballpark this spring, with the team's cafeteria getting a nutritional overhaul by ownership. The two elements, fitness and good eating habits, have always gone hand in hand. And as Anderson frequently points out, what the Orioles have implemented is nothing new or cutting edge. If anything, it is a throwback to Eastern European and Russian weightlifting techniques, details gleaned from hours of watching Olympic weightlifting videos and decathlons, taught and applied by a group that -- in addition to Anderson, Naito and Cater -- includes head strength-and-conditioning coach Joe Hogarty, biomechanics pitching specialist Ryan Crotin and pitching rehab coordinator Chris Correnti.

Chris Davis says it is a good workout.

I wonder where Richie Bancells is in all of this? Didn't he used to oversee this stuff back in the day? Is he kinda considered a Dinosaur in the clubhouse?

Richie is the Orioles Head Athletic Trainer. Brian Ebel is the Assistant. Kind a different group.

That's about how I'd describe it, too. At least he's doing a Brady workout, but it's a shame he can't get his ass to wherever Brady is. It's only your contract year, man!

On one hand, I think, "Man, I would love to do Brady's workout for 3 months. It would be the push I need to drop weight, add muscle, and stop being a lazy almost 40 year old. If I'm thinking this, where is Kakes?"

On the other hand, I think, "Kakes has a young child and a new baby. There is NOWHERE else he should be other than home with them."

That bolded part is kinda scary. Gives ammo to everyone claiming his 50 homer year was a little, uh, aided. :scratchchinhmm:

    • The reality is, we don’t know if they will contribute as much or more than the guys they would replace, or whether they’ll be significant downgrades.  There’s significant risk involved, especially when you’re talking about a team that’s winning with the personnel it already has.  If this was the 2021 offseason, decisions like this would be easy.   That paragraph might sound like I’m advocating standing pat.  I’m not.  I’m just saying these decisions aren’t simple.  Our evaluators have a lot of tricky decisions to make.  I’ll say this: I’m not making any moves yet based on what guys like Beavers, Fabian or Bradfield might do in 2-3 years.  None of those guys have a better than 50/50 chance to be better than our current outfielders at this stage.   Ask me again in a year and maybe I’ll feel differently.    
    • Minnesota has some pitching though. 
    • I’m more concerned with the general downturn in the offense in the last few weeks than I am about the Red Sox series in particular.  On the other hand, our pitching has been on fire.  We’ll see how things go.  There’s never any good way to predict what will happen next in baseball.  It’s a streaky game and hot and cold streaks often start and stop for no apparent reason.
    • I think Ojabo is a write-off.  With 2 career-threatening ankle injuries I just don't see how he can come back as a contributor.  The return-to-play rate after and achilles injury is already dicey, and he did make it back, but now to stack another one on top of that...
    • Just starting a thread to cover the AFL games since the other thread is about who made the roster.   First four games are night games beginning at 9:30 pm ET.  At least, I think it’s 9:30 and not 8:30.   Phoenix is 3 hours behind is right now and the schedule says 6:30 MST.   Phoenix stays on Standard Time in the summer.  Saturday’s game is a day game that I believe starts at 5:30 ET.
