We like Peralta for LF

Peralta in LF just seems strange. My guess is that Baltimore is in conversation with Peralta's camp as an infielder in the event that Hardy is traded. The position switch poses to big of a question mark to justify FA commitment. I'd be interested in Peralta as a 3B/SS, but 3/45 is too rich for my blood.

Speaking hypothetically, it's possible but not something I think anyone could know until they tried it. Obviously Manny could probably adapt more easily while Hardy (if he did adapt) would probably take longer. But all that is irrelvant because you're talking about GG infielders who would be wasted at any position other than SS or 3B. Peralta doesn't fit that because he's horrible at SS and passable (or was 4 years ago) at 3B.

We didn't see much of Peralta in LF last year but what we saw wasn't good. Now, it's possible he gets better out there, but I can't see anyone making that distinction without seeing a lot of workout time... something a team isn't going to see until AFTER he's signed. Overall, I don't think his injury history/PED paggage justify that experiment.

I just think infielders can play outfield most of the time. I do think that you reduce a competent infielder's value if you move him there.

Peralta was willing to stay in LF for the Tigers, but they weren't crazy about the idea. I suggested a few weeks ago that the O's sign Peralta to play 3B and trade Hardy, so my guess is that if they're interested in Peralta, it's for 3B. Would be nice to have his OBP in the lineup.

For those clamoring for McLouth over Peralta from a production standpoint, what exactly do you see in Nate's bat that you don't see in Peralta's? They are nearly identical in terms of overall offensive value.

Peralta's a better hitter than Mclouth, sure, but defensively it's not even close. As an overall package, Mclouth would probably still be a better LF than Peralta. Not to mention, Mclouth is going to cost a lot less than Peralta will.

How about J.J. Hardy. Do you think he can play left field? Or Manny?

I get the feeling that they could radically change the way a baseball field looks, and even if it invented three or four different radically new defensive positions, Manny could play them all like an MVP. XoD

Do you mean in LF? Again, I don't know anything about Peralta the outfielder. My statement was really just about the bat.

Also, I'd like to pin down Peralta's infield defense. Fans don't seem to like him at SS, DRS paints him as pretty average, UZR generally likes him. It seems by most metrics he's been a better shortstop over the last few years than he was earlier in his career. There's not really enough of a sample size to judge his performance at 3B definitively, but it seems he's at least competent there.

Anyone have any opinions?

Yeah I meant in left field. I think McLouth is a pretty good leftfielder, whereas the opinion on Peralta was that he did not look good out there in his brief time with the Tigers. I don't think he has the speed to be an effective outfielder. I think he is a decent enough SS and probably would be a pretty good 3B, though. If we trade Hardy I'd be fine with picking him up.

A Peralta signing seems to only make sense if it is a prelude to a Hardy deal. Peralta at either third or short, depending upon the recovering state of the Manny. But the Hardy deal then better be daggone worth it. Peralta in left in 2014 is an absurd idea in my view.

Rosenthal thinks that this is a precursor to trading Hardy.

Before you ask, no I don't have a link-he didn't report this.

I spoke to Rosenthal on the phone briefly about this.

Before anyone tries to sway my credibility, remember, I told the Hangout Rosenthal was posting a story on a SS that the Cardinals might go after, and it was Tulo.

As always, some will believe, some won't and I'm OK with that. Bottom line, Rosenthal like us, sees this as a precursor to trading Hardy.
