About time.

As much as we like JJ, it's very hard to like him for 10 million dollars worth of salary with our pressing team needs and upcoming extensions. I would have thought we'd be forced to trade him... was all this up till now a show for other teams to make it seem like we are not desperate to trade him?

If Baltimore doesn't want him for $10MM, I think it's safe to say other teams are going to want some money to come along with JJ if they are going to be expected to give anything up. Might have to choose between freeing up payroll or getting a solid player back. Otherwise, maybe Baltimore could take on someone else's unwanted contract but at a position of greater team need.

Just because some of the fans here, don't want him, doesn't mean he doesn't have value to other teams in need of a closer.

I was thinking that if he is moved, we would prob eat $2-3MM of his salary.

Olney states that they are willing to listen. Willing is the operative word. Someone has to be talking to them before they can actually be listening.

I would hope that adding either Wieters or Hardy to a Jim Johnson deal would make it far more attractive and improve the return substantially.

I think this is his last year on this contract; correct me if I'm wrong. Unless he has another 2012 season, he will not have his contract renewed. He will note be making top dollar from anyone else. Would his agent like the security of three years of getting paid or the uncertainty of what could happen in an open market?

How would you feel about a Johnson extention' date=' say 3 years at 21 million?[/quote']

I feel he could get that contract at any time he wants. He's lined up to make around 10 MM this year -- I wouldn't give that up were I him. Additionally, Baltimore using him as a closer again is going to push him towards "high end closer" status by virtue of saves accrued. Provided his peripherals aren't terrible, and he operates as closer for the full year with another 40+ saves, he's going to get a 3-4 years over $8MM per when he hits free agency.

    • Had a couple of base hits up the middle last night, one of which was off a 98 MPH fastball, so maybe he's starting to get his timing down.  He's still not driving the ball too much yet, but that will come. I think he's close to a breakout game.
    • I know that you know this but probably don’t care. But the facts are 2019 was A LONG TIME AGO. And his initial injury was now 2 years ago. I’m not sure how relevant those 2019 numbers are to the ineffective pitcher that he is right now. We waited on him all season last year and that didn’t prove to be wise. If we get something from him that will probably be a great bonus. But I hope that there is now a plan A that doesn’t include waiting for a now off injury pitcher to turn back into the player that he was 5 years ago.
    • This thread is eerily similar to Cowser discussion last year… at some point, it may become needed  to reset and go back down .. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle are famous examples
    • You've been on quite the roll lately. The curmudgeony is starting to melt away! 🤣
    • I am guessing the extension only works when the player is rehabbing directly following recovery from surgery.   That was the case with Hernandez.  But in Means’ case, he pitched in four major league games, pretty effectively, after his 2023 rehab stint.  So I doubt this would count as a post-surgery rehab.  I guess we’ll find out.
    • He would have had an RBI double last night if the ball didn't get "stuck" under the wall. Kjerstad would have easily scored. I didn't get to see the entire game, unfortunately.  I did get to see Kjerstad with some really superb swing decisions. He looks pretty locked in. It's a shame about the myocarditis, still blows my mind that he's 25.
    • You had the same info we have now. You knew he missed the playoffs because of an injury.    You knew we had barely seen him since the TJ surgery.    And that was part of the point but you dismissed it.
