This weekend or Bust??????

Is time running short on a Bedard Trade???? Could it be we move him this weekend or we go forward with him on our team this year??? It seems like all the information that is coming through suggest we are approaching a deadline. Is this AM's way of getting the ball rolling? This may be getting interesting.......

I am posting this because of the information in the papers that AM may be ready to move along.

Yeah. I think time is running out in MacPhail's own mind. He doesn't want to let the organization and the fans down. He has a lot on his plate.

I think something could possibly be happening today... whether it is Bedard or Roberts.

Isn't that Chicago convention starting today? I am reading reports on the internet of speculation that the Cubs would like to get Bedard, too. (Heck, a lot of teams would.)

Lots of speculation. Lots of rumors. Lots of heat. I DO have a feeling about today, though. Just hope it's a feeling about the Orioles making a move(s).

I have had this feeling about 10 days in the last month. I am not sure anything is going to happen anymore. I think we aren't going to get the players we want. If reports are true about the M's not wanting to include Jones than I don't see how that deal can go through and I wouldn't blame AM. It's gotten to the point that I am tired of hearing about other GM's not wanting to include top prospects. If they don't want to include them, then they shouldn't even waste our time.

Well here is to hoping you guys are right about something happening, but I am not holding my breath.

I don't know if it's this weekend or bust, but the Tejada trade sure is looking better and better all the time. The analysis we've seen on Luke Scott looks very promising. I'm interested in seeing Dennis Safarte and both Patton and Albers could contribute this season. I really don't expect much from Costanza, but a starting outfielder (and eventual DH when/if Reimold arrives), hard throwing setup man, and two pitchers with start potential is a pretty productive trade for a player facing so many problems.

This was my point in the thread yesterday about MacPhail's negotiations. The other GM's know what AM wants and if you're not including a top prospect like Jones/Pie etc., don't waste our time.

Are you talking about the articles from earlier this month suggesting end of January because I have seen nothing in about two weeks other than do not expect anything for 48 hours that keeps repeating itself.

Based on Boom Boom's great thread yesterday, I'm going to believe we have until the season starts to make our trades. Or until MacPhail plainly says he's not making any more moves.

I am going to be frustrated both by the inactivity and by this oft-repeated excuse. If AM is truly not getting fair value for Bedard/Roberts, then fine. We have to accept that. But with all of the talk, and the value of those players, I really feel moves need to be made.

I have a hard time believing we haven't been offered fair value for Bedard. After all, a player is worth how much a team is willing to give up for him, and with the number of teams that have been interested, I think we should have a pretty good idea of his value at this point. I think some people fail to remember that the team that gets him may only have him for two years, and thus most teams may not want to give up the farm for him.

This is what I am saying also. I have been frustrated the past few weeks. I was blaming AM for holing out for too much and not taking some of the deals that I thought were more than acceptable. Now though, I have gotten to the point that I am tired of hearing that teams don't want to give up good prospects for a pitcher that I think will be one of the best in the league next season. I think if teams don't want to give up a Bruce, Jones, Pie, etc, then I am to the point that I would just rather see them hold onto them. If teams are playing on the fact that they think "we have to trade to rebuild" then I say we take that illusion away. Let Seattle and Cinci finish second or third in their division next year. Then I look forward to going to the same boards of those teams that I am now and instead reading their smug fans whining about how they should have given up that "GREAT" "UNTOUCHABLE" prospect back in January that would have landed them Bedard.

    • Yeah I was hopeful for him but after seeing last night (where it all caught up to him) I just don't think he has the stuff any more. He used to have an excellent 2 seamer with good velocity and arm side run but that doesn't seem to exist anymore with the velocity drop.
    • Well I was just a peon when I worked there, so it’s not like that experience mattered in my decision. And my view on extensions isn’t you are paying for past years. Hell, I would sign Holliday today and Gunnar is only a year into things. The issue with the extensions is that you are already have the player(s) locked up for most of the years anyway. So, when you sign them to an extension, you are guaranteeing 7-9 years but really all you are gaining is 2-3 years.  It’s a lot of money and guarantees for only a few years. Now, the one thing that I have talked about that is important here is if you don’t extend them, do you look to trade them 1-2 years away from free agency because you don’t want to lose a talent like Gunnar, for example, for nothing.  So, maybe the extension buys you a few additional years on top of what are already getting.  OTOH, you may just decide to go for it with the player and lose them for nothing. I guess you always have the option of going the Tatis route and go 14-15 years but I’m not sure of anyone who is advocating for that or would be ok with that.  As for your business decision point here..I think that’s probably the biggest reason you do it…because players like the commitment and the fans like the commitment and there is value to that.
    • Honestly, I’m much more concerned about Tate than Akin.   91.7 mph avg velocity on the sinker. 11.4% K rate. 11.4% BB rate. 91.8 mph exit velocity. 53.8% hard hit rate. 9.8% whiff rate. 14.5% chase rate. 3.8% swinging strike rate. 4.50 ERA. 5.70 FIP. 5.49 xFIP. 5.06 SIERRA.  6.30 xERA. 84 stuff+ on sinker. 88 location+ on sinker. The ground ball rate is still good, but I’m not sure that’s going to be enough to save him.
    • Facing Ragans today. Must starts include Rutschman, Mountcastle, and McCann. Must sit is Holliday.   I think Adley might DH today unless Burnes insists on him catching his stuff.
    • Ben McDonald mentioned the leg kick maybe not working in the MLB. He is going to have to make an adjustment it seems like.  Just way too many swings and misses.
    • I thought you were mistaken on the silver slugger award. I had to look it up. That was a very low bar and he benefited greatly by being in the utility category.  Gunnar is a special player and I would sign him to an extension as the primary goal. Obviously I would have all three on the team as long as they could, though.
    • First hit was a good pitch on the outside corner maybe not a strike.   Second hit wasn’t that bad of a pitch either.
