Schmuck calls out the Orioles!

Rhetoric

Exactly right. Remember this is the first owner who's seen fit to extend Buck for any decent length of time. What was he going to do, turn around and say something contrary to the way Angelos has run the team for the last 15 years? Not much has changed except that the baseball people running things are better equipped to deal with his tight fisted ownership.

Its hard to believe the O's are under such strict "budget constraints" when the Nationals had a $118 million payroll last year, and will probably increase it to $130 mill+ this year. The Nationals only get a small piece of the MASN pie too. The Nats GM and owner should be complaining twice what the O's do about their money shortages. I am interested in whether the O's will do more than talk this offseason, because money talks but bulls**t walks.

They can go back to Montreal if they don't like it here. Take off. Eh.

Did this:

There’s really no other explanation for that, considering Dan Duquette announced unequivocally in late September that Johnson would be tendered a contract and would enter the 2014 season as the Orioles closer.

ever actually happen?

I don't remember DD unequivocally stating that Johnson would be an O in 2014.

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed this afternoon that the Orioles will tender a contract to closer Jim Johnson for the 2014 season, viewing him as part of a core group that he wants to keep in Baltimore.

Johnson's status was uncertain after nine blown saves and the prospect of receiving another substantial raise from the $6.5 million he's earning this season. That's a significant chunk of money for a ninth inning specialist.

"Jim Johnson is one of our core players," Duquette said during batting practice.

So, the intention is to bring back Johnson next season?

"Yes, it is," Duquette said.

I believe he said they would definitely be offering a contract to Johnson specifically. This is a tough read from Schmuck, man. Don't like what I'm reading one bit.

I agree that Dan said he would be tendering him a contract, that I remember. I don't remember him stating the Johnson would be pitching for the O's in 2014.

Pretty sure it didn't happen.

Other then that the article was pretty good for Schmuck.

Duquette told Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com yesterday that the team fully intends to tender him a contract for 2014.

“Jim Johnson is one of our core players,” said Duquette, who has emphasized keeping that core intact for the organization to sustain success. “Jimmy has done something historic in terms of the numbers of games he’s saved over the last couple years, so he’s established significant value. He came into the job last year, I think he had nine saves in his career, and over the last two years, he has over 100, 99.”

Are we going to get into a depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is sidebar? If so, then who knows if he meant "Jim Johnson is one of our core players.

I have no desire to get into a fight about it at all.

I just don't think Dan is the type to make unequivocal declarations about things. I figured he left himself some wiggle room.

That was the only observation I was making.

Bit surprised he made a strong a statement as he did.

Just a thought here but does announcing that they are non-tendering him a contract maybe devalue him in a possible trade.

No the 10.8m he was gonna get did that.

Russell Smouse has no idea who Jim Johnson is, and what a groundball dependent closer is.

In fairness, my translation of his quote is he wanted to bring him back but he knew a deal of that size had to be run by his boss. Kind of how "resource allocation" is GM speak for "cheap owner."

    • As I said, someone(s) has to go.    Over the next few years, you also enter Mayo and Basallo into the picture. Mayo is reportedly shagging fly balls now. They are working on him in the OF.  Only a matter of time before he’s in games. But he will play first some and DH some. Basallo will as well. Both have a talent advantage over silent J,  Cowser, Stowers, Norby, Beavers, etc… So, some kind of move(s) will need to be made. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.
    • He was missing so much up and arm side with the fastball and STILL made it work. Impressive start. It's the Twins and Angels, so grain of salt but we'll absolutely take it.
    • Or we could trade one of the prospects and get another ace type. Either way, I think we are in really great shape.
    • This is all very simple.  We are just blessed to have Elias and his team here in Baltimore. It’s not just their eye for talent. It’s the methods they use. How they develop, what they look for, etc… Baltimore sports fans have been spoiled for years with the Ravens. An excellent drafting and developing team. They don’t always hit homers but they hit a ton of doubles. It has allowed the Ravens to be one of the best franchises for 25 years and relevant almost every year, especially years when they are healthy. And just think, we haven’t even started to get help from the international signings. What a time to be an Os fan.    Oh!!  And we have an actual adult as an owner now.  Someone who actually gives a sh!t.
    • Yeah Baumann's whole thing is really getting old at this point.
    • It probably was the easiest move for Elias to make. DFA the 40th man on the 40 man. We lost a MLB starting level OF. Call up our closest to the MLB OF prospect. Just finish out the road trip without losing anyone else. Get back home and reassess. We have a big series versus the Yankees coming up and I would not be surprised if we do use matchups to more than we would other games.
    • I know this may be an unpopular opinion but with our depth and given the Yankees age, I just don’t see them being able to compete with us over the course of 162. Especially if Grayson and Burnes stay healthy. The Orioles are actually a better team than last year due to the maturation of some of the young position players.  I think the Yanks would have to win 100+ games in preset to put pace us over the season. And I just don’t see that with what they have. Don’t get me wrong I respect the heck out of them. And I think that they are good. But I just think the Orioles are even better than last year. We only have 1 weakness - middle relief. If we get a healthy Bradish back at some point this season. And if Holliday ever figures things out, I can’t see anybody in the sport really being favored against us (including the Rangers, Braves, and Dodgers).
