While they're getting rid of stupid things in baseball, how about making both leagues play with the same rules? DH or no DH there shouldn't be two sets of rules.

I agree! You know for all the O's fans who like the DH rule. I honestly think the O's would win more if we moved to the NL. We never have a good DH.

I'd like to see the actual rule. I tend to think that the wording is more like "must avoid contact" than "must slide". A "must slide" rule becomes very tricky because if there is no slide, but no contact and the play is deemed "close" the runner can be called out.

Looks like it hasn't been completely written yet, but it does bar catchers from blocking the plate:

"The rule, which must still be defined and finalized prior to a vote, will also prohibit catchers from blocking the plate, similar to players making tags at a base."

Seems like a good idea to me. I always thought that collisions at the plate, while exciting, were kind of stupid.

This is a good rule honestly. Now catchers should "guard" home plate just like a second baseman or SS makes plays at second base. The home plate collision is unnecessary and this is from someone who use to think it it was poor when they took it away from adult baseball years ago.

I used to love a good home plate collision.

Then I started reading what folks suffering from concussions have been dealing with.

Not worth it.

And while we're at it, let's make all minor league baseballs the exact same dimensions of the MLB ball. Makes no sense that players (especially pitchers, to whom the feel and grip of the ball is super-important) train up on one ball but have to use a slightly different one in the bigs.

Great rule change imo. The rule of the catcher not blocking the plate and the runner not being able to target the catcher works well at every other level. Baseball is a game of skill and execution and allowing collisions at home plate whose only purpose is to knock the hell out of the catcher in hopes of him dropping the ball is completely out of character with how the rest of the game is played.

Taking out a defender at 2B on a DP ball is not even comparable to home plate collisions for those that would cite that example. Not even in the same ballpark, no pun intended. If you are for home plate collisions, what is the rationale for not letting ARod knock the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove while going down to first base? Or maybe giving an elbow to the head of the first baseman on a close play?

    • I would feel better about this game if he would foul off a few close ones with 2 strikes-like Kjerstad did last night-instead of just watching them go by. Take those pitches on the outside to the opposite field.  If your expecting 1 pitch but get another, fight it off.
    • His path to staying in baseball is as a utility player. The more positions he can play, the more likely he is to stay in the league. Good for him. But I don't anticipate him back in Baltimore. We saw them go Kjerstad when Hays even though the team is very lefty heavy. With Mateo getting looks in CF and Cowser able to play there for a bit, there really isn't any role that he's next in line for (or even 2nd or third in line). Even learning 2B doesn't get him in a next in line position given Norby.
    • In my book, he’s had two outings that were awful and three that were decent, including yesterday’s.  My guess is that if he has a decent outing on the 27th, the O’s won’t go through gymnastics to try to find a way to extend his rehab, even though his ERA has been a train wreck.
    • Why is Tony still batting 4th?  Move Westy to #3 and Mounty to #4; or vice versa but good grief Hyde... come on.... Tony should be down at the 7/8 slot.
    • Holliday looked a lot more confident last night and his defense is improving.  I don't think he's "getting better", I think he's finally relaxing and his natural ability that he's worked on over many, many years is taking over.  It's like he's been thinking too much about every action you take while swinging the bat vs. just swinging the bat and his muscle memory taking over.  I'm predicting him heating up a little bit.  It might only be to hit .200 w/ little power for the next week, but should be enough to keep him up.  The line drive (if weak) right at the pitcher was another encouraging sign that his timing is getting on track.
    • Especially on an away day game after a night game.
    • It would probably be better to give Adley a day off when we are facing a righty considering how many LHH that we have. Anyway, Adley is on a roll right now, so I'm not sure you want to take his hot bat out of the lineup.
