Moreover, I don't see why some people seem eager to shift Machado to shortstop, anyway. If it ain't broke...

I like the idea of keeping Hardy around for 2-3 more years. If it could be done for $10 million per year, I'd be fine with it. That said, I'd start backing off if the price got above $12 million, particularly since his inability to get on base drives me up walls during the season.

What aren't we considering? Bringing Ryan Kohlmeier back to close? Seeing if Brady still has it in LF? Calling up Jose Mercedes to be the 5th stater?

His skill-set already creates wild fluctuations in value year to year. I don't see that as a good sign if we are going to extend him until he's 35. The team isn't good enough keeping the current roster intact. If we don't have the payroll room to add free agents and we won't trade anyone while they still have value, how do we add talent to the organization?

Wild fluctuations? He's been worth 4.3, 2.6, and 3.4 fWAR since joining the Orioles. He's been consistently valuable, if anything. Besides, look at the FA market, and think about the question I asked above: who plays third if Hardy's gone and Machado's moved? FA's are only getting more expensive, and the O's don't have many potential, positional replacements in the minors. How much do you think a soon-to-be FA Hardy would garner in a trade? If he'd net a ready-for-the-majors infield prospect, then why wouldn't the team trading for Hardy simply run with the prospect? If Hardy wouldn't get you that kind of player, why are you trading him away? A handful of marbles? For what, FA relief pitchers?

Hardy plays a difficult to fill position, he plays it well, and he might continue to play it for a reasonable price for the O's. I say keep him. I also say change for the sake of change isn't productive.

I'd just as soon trade him and shift Machado if there's sufficient interest, but if you can extend him again for a similar deal (3/30 or less) I'd be OK with it. Where else are you going to get 6-10 WAR over 3 seasons for under $30 MM in this market?

Also, while Machado's bat would play better at SS, if he's a +15 defender at 3B and an average defender at SS, he's more valuable at 3B. Instincts, actions, hands, and arm are all strengths. Natural range is not. Many scouts predicted he'd settle in at 3B.

Hardy is 31 and coming into his walk year. He is certainly a good player and considering signing him to an extension makes a lot of sense. Why would you compare extending Hardy to these type of transactions?

I'm pretty sure they're including a "bats are meant for balls" clause as standard language in new contracts. Also pretty sure the definitions section specifies that "balls" does not mean "face."
