Yankee Brian Roberts. (Update: Signs for $2M+)

What bothers me most is that as of now with the nothing we have done we actually could have used his bat. Sure hope we pick up somebody. This is getting ridiculous.

not to mention that it would leave NYwith worse 2b options...

You can't fault him with a hamstring injury last year as all players can get this and he probably needed more time in minors to get back up to speed. If he stays healthy even at last year's production, his full year production is better than what we have now.

Flaherty passed BRob defensively at 2B last year. And, of course, Flash is more durable. Roberts would have had to take a backup role this year. Some on this board thought Buck couldn't or wouldn't make that switch. Looks like DD will force that to happen by not pursuing Roberts.

Roberts was the face for the franchise for a while in his prime. That time is long gone to injuries and age. I will not feel bad about Brian's leaving. It is time. Nor will I boo him if he becomes a Yankee.

I expect where ever Brian goes he will hit for a 700 OPS, be patient at the plate and play an average to slightly below average 2B. Time moves on an so must the O's management, players and fan base.

What's he supposed to do, take a minor league deal to compete for a job in Baltimore? Or tell the Yankees, "Sorry, I have to turn down your offer to start on your playoff-contending team because the Orioles, who don't want me anymore and went to the playoffs one time during my 12 year tenure with the team, are your rivals. I gotta take my talents elsewhere to be a veteran presence on a losing team."

You boo Koji when he comes to town as well?

Yes, exactly. Very well said.

I could boo him easily. He could have easily come back on a team friendly deal, in return for the 20 million he cost the team doing nothing and really hurting the Orioles in 2012 with his 10 million on the books. Just another astonishing revelation of greed over loyalty.

What, in your mind, are the top 5 examples of injured players returning money they were owed on their contracts while they were injured? Just curious.

Hope he hits .100 and it will be a cold day before he even sniffs the Orioles HOF. Millions paid to him for absolutely nothing and he just takes the first train out of town to our most bitter rivals. It will be fun to boo the heck out of him!

What's he supposed to do? It sounds like in his mind he thinks he can still play. Most here on this board wanted him gone so what do you care if he decides to keep playing and he takes an offer from another team. Is he supposed to just quietly go home and sit around in his Orioles uniform?

Why are you pissed at Roberts? He obviously wants to keep playing baseball. The Orioles haven't bothered to even contact him about a contract.

Agreed!!!! NYC is a nice place to live if you have money and if you have the choice you take NYC over Milwaukee. Reminds me of a Night Court segment with Yakov Smirnoff:

[about Yakov's brother, who doesn't want to go back to the Soviet Union]

Baliff Nostradamus 'Bull' Shannon: Is it really that bad over there?

Yakov Korolenko: You ever been to Milwaukee?

Baliff Nostradamus 'Bull' Shannon: Yeah.

Yakov Korolenko: Close your eyes.

Baliff Nostradamus 'Bull' Shannon: Why?

Yakov Korolenko: Please?

[bull does]

Yakov Korolenko: When you open your eyes, you're going to be in the middle of Milwaukee. No matter where you go, no matter how far you run, you're still going to be in the middle of Milwaukee. You can get in a cab, and drive two hundred miles in any direction, and you're still going to be in the middle of Milwaukee. You can get in an airplane, and fly two thousand miles, and you're still...

Baliff Nostradamus 'Bull' Shannon: [clutching his head] NO! STOP, STOP IT!

[bull rushes away]

Yakov Korolenko: [to his brother] Works every time.

Brian Roberts:

2003 - .270/.337/.367 with 22 doubles and 23 steals. O's record? 71-91.

2004 - .273/.344/.376 with 50 doubles and 29 steals. O's record? 78-84.

2005 - .314/.387/.514 with 45 doubles, 18 HR, and 27 steals. O's record? 74-88.

2006 - .286/.347/.410 with 34 doubles and 36 steals. O's record? 70-92.

2007 - .290/.377/.432 with 42 doubles and 50 steals. O's record? 69-93.

2008 - .298/.376/.450 with 51 doubles and 40 steals. O's record? 68-93.

2009 - .283/.356/.451 with 56 doubles, 16 HR, and 30 steals. O's record? 64-98.

I'll always hold Brian's injuries against him to some degree, mainly because the primary injury that essentially nullified the value of his "big" contract was self-inflicted. That said, looking at the above, I'm a little surprised he didn't take a bat to his own head more quickly. Lord knows I would have.

My gut reaction to hearing that BRob might sign with the Yankees was the hope that he doesn't perform well in NY, and that the Yankees fail to make the playoffs (as per my usual feelings regarding the Yankees). But looking over Brian's career in Baltimore, I'd say he deserves a shot at something better than what he experienced here. And, if I'm casting the vote, he easily makes the O's HOF, regardless of where he ends his career.

You imply that being a fan is necessarily rational. And that it involves somehow not becoming emotionally attached to players. If they go to the Skankees, then I am going to react emotionally. Not in a mean spirited fashion (I have always supported Brian as an Oriole and wish him the best as a person) but as a die hard, fan- attic, IF (and I retract it ALL if the if turns out to be an if only) Brian is a Yankee, then he becomes the DARK one!!

I am heartbroken as I have always been one of the biggest of Brian fans. And I have plenty left for Potter.

I didn't really want to re-sign Roberts but I didn't want this.

    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
