Even for the Cubs this is confusing.

Procedural. Like we did with Chris Jones.

Our days of picking up players off the scrap heap may be over.

This right here is just so sweet. The fact that we have a lot of scouts watching our games to see what they can snatch off of OUR SCRAP HEAP is just so strange and yet totally refreshing. However DD is well known for making any move that he and the organization feel adds depth that a scrap heap snatch would never surprise me.

Why would we ever want players like Nate McLouth or the other half dozen castoffs who played key roles in '12?

Oh, come on. Even you must agree the talent level for this team is different compared to that one. I'm certainly not complaining about contributions we got from players in that year, but it is quite different picking your LF up from being released by another team as opposed to one of the top 50 FA available.

Dan Duquette would sign 2012 Nate to a minor league deal with an opt out this season. He might just allow him to opt out with this team.

I don't see it as being that much different. David Lough is basically a push from McLouth, and he's the starting left fielder.

Lough is coming off a much better season than was McClouth. Our overall talent base is stronger, but it's not worth arguing either. It certainly wasn't a statement I made to diminish anything we've done in the past, rather I like the moves we've made to get to this point.

I wouldn't say much. It all comes down to how much you believe in the defensive numbers, and if they'll repeat in '13. McLouth is a better offensive player.

I was talking about when we acquired McClouth since my "scrap heap" comment started all this. There is no comparison if you are looking at when we first acquired both players.

I'll take Lough because he's younger and can presumably provide the offense that McClouth would have AND his acquisition saved us about $10 mil in the process.

This wasn't about the players they are today though, McClouth was a true reclamation project. Many people gave him little chance of making it back to the ML. I'm glad he did, but let's not pretend the players were regarded the same at the time we acquired them.

    • There is no question in my mind that the coaching staff and analytics staff is doing everything in their power to make sure that Holliday is as well prepared as possible before every game.  And he's been in few enough games at this point to where I wonder if there's enough data yet to start drawing up an effective strategy anyway.  Now that the decision has been made to bring him up, Holliday is owed a long enough window to show he can't make the adjustment even with the benefit of the best support.  If that means he has to be sent down, I'm not going to stress about it.  I'm also not going to hold my breath that he'll turn the corner even so.  Adley made it, Gunnar made it, so did Westburg and Cowser and Mountcastle and Grayson...  If Holliday doesn't make it I'll be surprised and disappointed, but the Orioles under Elias are still way ahead of the game and Norby is looking for an opportunity and time marches on.
    • We have 5 guys on pace for 117 RBI.
    • If a good defensive SS hits 54 HR and is only worth 8.1 WAR I’m gonna have some serious questions on their methodology.
    • It’s not the same …. Henderson was batting just under .200. Holliday is batting .040. So about 20 % as good as Henderson was at his worst. And he’s striking out in more than 1 out of 2 trips to the plate.   There is no sense panicking either way. But, there is nothing wrong with sending him down. I think too many of you guys are acting like not sticking with him is some kind of sin. As a fan, I’m worried about damaging his confidence too much.    Plus after all the bullshit from his father, hopefully now he will keep his mouth shut.
    • Pedantic is an adjective. Your definition has it as a noun.
    • There's a difference between being patient at the plate as opposed to comatose.
