If they wait until 2015, the value goes down as he'd be a one year rental. It's unlikely they're going to be able to afford to extend his contract. I see your point and they could manage like the Orioles with Wieters but I assume they're smarter than that.

The way I see it you have to factor in the increase in playoff and WS title chances Price gives you. As good as they are at developing young pitching having Price on the roster definitely increases their chances next season.

Also don't forget that St Pete just got a new Mayor.

Because they feel that giving Cano a stupid contract is stupider than the Orioles' perennial approach to first insure that "at least we didn't do anything stupid". A winning strategy if there ever was one for owners who consider stupidity a desirable commodity in their fan base.

I just don't understand the logic of comparing the O's francise to the Rays. Bloomberg has the O's as the 7th most valuable franchise while the Rays are dead last at 30th. The Orioles have the resources. Angelos has chosen not to seize the opportunity to improve the franchise.
