PBT ranks baseballs worst off-seasons

I don't understand the "offseason isn't over yet" comments. What's wrong with judging things up until a certain point? We do that anyway during the season. If we were 20 games under .500 at the halfway point I guarantee you there wouldn't be many posters on here saying "Well it's not over yet!" Nope, we'd be all whining about what a horrible season it's been.

I'd trade Matt+ for Price. I wanna keep Chris.

Zero chance of this. Rays will eventually trade Price because they can't afford to re-sign him. They don't want a catcher they can't sign afford. Also, they are very excited about acquiring Ryan Hanigan, who is signed for 3 years.

Of course they can afford to re-sign him. They will just choose not to.

I don't know why they bother writing these articles in December. The offseason shouldn't be judged until it's over.

Serious question - when do you consider the offseason "over?"

Late February or when most of the talented players are off the marketplace?

I always feel that the offseason is over once there's no one left who can enhance the club's chances at a championship run.

Right now, I don't believe the door is shut, but we're like 85% of the way there.

Not to speak for Frobby but YES! When we get to ST! Even to the end of ST. When the games start to count. What part of that don't you understand?

Looks like the part where he said that he feels like the offseasons over when there's no one left that can enhance the club's chances at a championship run.

So.... like after Cano signed? Offseason's done. Close the books. We're done and we're doomed. DOOMED I tell ya!

Its a little over the top to think that between now and opening day the O's cant make 2-3 moves that could propel them into the mix. There are guys in FA who can still help us and there are guys we could potentially trade for. It's fair to question if those moves will be made based on how things have gone so far but possibilities do remain. I also think that getting Manny, Davis or Wieters signed could improve the long term outlook of this franchise even if it might not necessarily improve the immediate future.

There is also some truth to what MSK is saying also. There comes a point when all the little moves are just not enough. You have to add a few guys who can give you a realistic shot of narrowing the gap between you the teams that were better than you the year before. There also comes a point when the guys who could be impact players who narrow that gap have signed and trading for a guy gets more difficult. If the goal is to take this team to the next level so we can compete for divisional crown or a championship, then moves like replacing McLouth with Lough (if stays that way) is not the way to go about achieving that goal. I loved the trade, as 4th OF he would be a great fit and could potentially become more. There are limited opportunities to significantly improve, LF was one of them. Thinking Lough is going to be the kind of upgrade that narrows the gap between us and Boston is just not based on anything but blind faith. The dude has accomplished about 1/2 season of decent stats and some so-so minor league ones. He has potential but is far from a sure thing. If the defense of going this route and starting him in LF is that there is nothing worth paying for in FA and we cant make a trade well ....that's just absurd. Teams make trades and sign for players they need all the time. So can we. Contrary to popular belief. They are not mythical creatures.

There is still time but there will come a point at which the moves and impact those guys can have will be more about keeping the team respectable than they are about winning a division or championship. Just my opinion. Not being doom and gloom....more glass half full/empty. We need to improve, we still have time. Lets hope it happens :)

We went into the offseason needing a LF, a SP and a DH. We salary dumped a CL so we then needed to replace that. I don't consider not being in on Ellsbury or Choo missed opportunities. The same for Tanaka. Failing to sign Balfour was. Perhaps not trading for Morrison was and also not signing Hart. I wouldn't have given Beltran 3 years. We will see where the market settles for Garza, Arroyo, Burnett, and Hammel. Also what the price becomes for Cruz and Morales. I think they'd give up the pick for Morales if his price comes down enough.

    • I think you'd see a much stronger correlation to how they were rated in the minors vs. draft position. Westburg has been treated similarly to Cowser and Kjerstad. Adley, Gunnar and Holliday were all consensus #1 prospects and have been given pretty much immediate every day player status.
    • Game ball or the equivalent of hockey star(s) of the game for me: Suarez — all of those zero’s on the road, gets my game ball. Kimbrel is my runner-up. I know striking out Trout with the bases loaded is the job, but it ain’t easy. Cowser - Honorable Mention. I’m still not 100 percent in on the Milkman nickname, but he sure is fun to watch.
    • Yeah - I was thinking Beavers could fill that spot, but it seems he is more suited for a corner outfield position, if he makes the bigs at all.
    • We have all this year and next if it’s needed.   No rush.  No hurry.
    • Kjesrtad was Elias's #1 pick in 2020 draft and #2 overall, so Elias saw something great in him.  Can you all imagine how powerful the O's will be if Holliday starts to hit and Kjerstadt hits like he did in the minors, Kjesrtad did good when he was called up in 2023.  They will be the Baltimore Bombers!
    • I'm not crushing Santander either, but he's a career .765 OPS guy. It was .797 last year. His only year over .800 was the Covid year. He plays average defense. Not a butcher, but not exactly rangy out there. Long story short, I think you can get similar power with more OBP from Kjerstad and Cowser with similar defense for Kjerstad and better for Cowser. So yes, I'd say they'll be better than Santander.
    • Can we get Buster Olney, talking heads, and various posters to look in the mirror for their ridiculing Elias' "hoarding" prospects? The strategy has always been about raising the competitive floor/ceiling while managing risk like a portfolio manager.  Seeking alpha while managing beta is the goal.  Sig's purpose is the quantify. And yet we still have people tossing out trade proposals and extensions and unhealthy FA pursuits because they know better and moving prospects to other positions.  It's fun to speculate but it's foolish to present it as an absolute.
