Trade on the horizon?

Davis for Matusz seems like a reasonable deal. Two former first round picks with spotty MLB careers. The Mets seem hell bent on Duda at first and the O's need a lefty bat. I like the deal. Matusz gets a fresh start in a big park in the NL and Davis gets out of Citifield another year removed from Valley Fever. Why not?

I don't understand the fascination with Smoak. He would be decent gamble if it didn't take much to get him, but he hasn't shown much in the past few years.

Yep. I agree. I would not give Matusz, Britton, etc. up for Smoak. Maybe offer to stock their soda machines and a few bags of used balls.

The likelihood of this trade being for Ike Davis, Smoak, or someone of similar caliber is probably pretty high. That said, I wonder if there is a chance that they are close to a deal for Samardzija?

Only if the Cubs are signing Tanaka. I would like that trade but they must ink Tanaka first.

.838 OPS vs. RHPs last year, hits much better away from Safeco, heading into his age 27-32 prime seasons, plenty of team control left, etc.

Everybody is loving walks these days. And we have plenty of power with or without Ike Davis. I suspect he'd hit some "bombs away" though.

Matusz would even out the money. Not sure what Britton is paid.

Money shouldn't be the issue where our payroll is right now. Acquiring talent while giving as little talent away as possible should be the issue.

And bombs at home too! :P Just eyeballed his spray chart http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=8433&position=1B&type=battedball and it looks like he could pull a few extra homers and doubles down the RF line in OPACY (Citifield is 330 down the line while OPACY is 318--they have similar right-center distances). That would be cool, but Davis's stats are awfully reminiscent of Reynolds', including both the BB's and K's (101 in 317 ABs/377 PAs last year), but with fewer bombs.

We're relatively deep in LHP relievers and so Matusz or Britton are possibilities, but Britton's salary last year was under .5 million. The Mets already have two LOOGYs on the active roster; I don't know how satisfied they are with them and thus whether they'd be interested in Matusz (or Patton). Hey, if the FO thinks Davis can bounce back, I'm all for it. I'm just reminding myself not to be surprised if Duquette pulls a very unexpected move!

Hmmm....what if we traded for Samardzija, then signed Burnett and Morales?

I think that would change a lot of people's thoughts about this offseason.

I would say that we had a great offseason if that happened!

Come on, Frobby- we all know money doesn't grow on trees. It's not like the parent organization of the Orioles is going to just come along and arbitrarily hand them tens of millions of dollars of free fun money like some drunken, time-travelling Soviet nanny-state bureaucrat, ya know?
