Even after big Jimenez signing, Orioles have remained in contact with Ervin Santana.

I doubt there is much to this rumor, but I agree that if true the plan would have to be to flip Norris and Seattle would seem like a likely destination. They need pitching, are willing to deal a MIF (Miller or Franklin), and Smoak would also be a potential fit for us. If they were able to move Norris for Miller or Franklin, the money saved would almost certainly offset more than 1/3 of Santana's 2014 salary since both of those guys are cheap (not arbitration eligible). It would not be a bad plan, but I doubt it happens at this stage of the off-season.

You save Norris and flip a pitcher at deadline.

Sure, that would work assuming the Orioles are willing to go into the season with a $115m-ish payroll. I have no idea if they are or not but that would be a big reversal in the way they have operated in a short period of time.

EDIT: It would also mean they feel comfortable not adding another bat before the season.

If DD somehow managed to sign Santana and flip one of the excess starters (i.e., Britton, Matusz, or Norris...preferably one of the first two, since I think Norris would be good in the pen) for a legitimate DH, I would be stunned into silence. I'm not even joking. I doubt I'd be able to think of anything to say for at least 24 hours.

This. Having a rotation with Tillman, Jimenez, Santana, Chen, Gonzo puts us right in the thick of things.

Joel Sherman is reporting that Jimenez's salary is $11.25 m next season with $2.25 deferred, which works out to $9 m against the 2014 payroll. So maybe there is a little more potential payroll wiggle room for adding another pitcher AND keeping Norris.

Factoring just the $9MM in, and the current payroll sits roughly around $92-93MM.
