I think we found Ervin next team.

I guess any Santana will do.

Actually, this is the kind of no-brainer, all-upside signing that Duquette has become a master at pulling off. If Johan Santana has anything left in that left arm, it will benefit the Orioles at some point this eason.

Holland's injury has been known for at least 2 months. Not sure that the act of them actually moving him to the DL means much in terms of their Ervin Santana interest. They signed Tommy Hanson to replace Holland.

Of course, they've had several other issues with their staff. They have to decide whether or not to give up the pick they just got for Nelson Cruz signing with us.

The only team that likes a bargain more than we do and if JJ pitches better they might look else really bad particularly if Jimenez underperforms.

Absolutely perfect! I can't believe we're on the same page regarding his potential relief skills.

Consider my ego stroked. :)

I'm thrilled to have a savvy pitcher like Johan Santana in our organization, even if he never pitches an inning for us. Having a guy like that around can only help the younger guys. And if he claws his way back to the majors, he might surprise us with what's left in the tank.

Love that it's a minor league deal... love that he's a lefty that can help in the pen. It also means there should be no Randy Wolf/JC Romero midseason desperation reach for a lefty.

Absolutely no downside to this.

I dont get the Santana love on this Board.

Just about every team in MLB needs SP, and yet, everybody is passing on this guy, and its not all because of the draft pick.

He was asking for too much money too many years. Now every team has spent most of their budget so he is getting offered even less. If he lowered his demands he would be signed today regardless of the draft pick.

When we last saw him he apparently topped out at 81, but flashed the changeup he is so well known for. On a positive note, he is nowhere near through with rehab and is well known to be targeting a mid-year return date.

Although he didn't pitch at all last year, he sure looked like the old Johan in 2012.

I've come out against the scrap heap approach on a number of occasions, but Santana is a worthwhile exception IMO. It seems his road is still pretty long though.

I like the veteranocity angle as well.

Yup. This one is all upside.
