Ryan Flaherty - Losing his lock on 2B?

I think the plan is for Flaherty to be both the starting 2b and the backup at SS and 3B. Jemile Weeks would play 2B on days that Flaherty needs to play SS or 3B. I think this makes more sense than relying on Weeks as the utility infielder (he has zero experience at 3B and limited experience at SS), and Weeks has more upside at the plate than a conventional utility infielder like AGon or Casilla.

I don 't get our manager's pronouncement that Flaherty will get the starts at second base. It seems contrary to the way he's handled these situations in the past. That is he's been non-committal. I like Flaherty a lot and I don't mind him at second base. I just think he is more valuable to the team in other roles.

Maybe Buck thinks Flaherty plays better when he has more confidence or is more relaxed, I don't know, but I believe in all sports the best managers/coaches make the sum of parts better by getting the best out of individuals. This is at least why I think Buck may be handling this or other position battles differently.

I, too, think Flaherty is most valuable as utility type/platoon.

Same manager sad of Schoop.."I would say that he?s competing for the job and there?s nobody ahead of him or behind for the job. It's way too early. ... He's as much in the mix as he was the day he got here. In my mind, I can tell you for sure, there?s nothing in stone about where he?s going to start the year ? down or up. In fact, we made sure he knows that.

I wouldn't sweat it much. Buck is managing and pushing buttons...

Well, Schoop has a better chance of winning the starting second base job than Weeks.

Schoop would have had a better shot at the starting job, if he hadn't been injured.

I suspect, since he has options, and they will want him to play every day, he will get some more seasoning at AAA and be up after the ASG.

Just watched Flaherty take Burnett deep to straight away CF.

I don't know if he is the starting 2B.... but he will be in the lineup somewhere 90% of the games

I just read in, another blog, that that he got a hold of a hanging fast ball, and more of a ST mistake, than what you would see in regular season.

Most people have thought that Ryan Flaherty started camp as the front-runner for the starting secondbase position and (I thought) Buck had even said that Flaherty would work at 2B exclusively early in the pre-season. But, with his start at 3B today, Ryan will have played more games at SS and 3B than 2B this spring.

Is this a sign that the team is no longer confidant in Machado's availability for the start of the season?

Or a sign that they now see Flaherty as more of a utility player than starting 2B?

Or a sign that Schoop and Weeks have made the position much more competitive?

Or just random noise during the early part of spring training?

If Manny is not ready then Ryan to third maybe. IMO

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
