2014 N.C.A.A. Tournament

OFFNY

HALFTIME and does UConn ever need it. Huskies have squandered a 15 pt lead. 35-31 UConn

They definitely looked in complete control for a large part of that first half and Kentucky looked over matched. Glad UK made it a game so far....

Where is the multicolored Aaron Harrison? I mean, 3 game winners is not enough?!

:)

That was a much more enjoyable game than the first game tonight.

Just to clarify, that was a request for an OFFNY name in highlights for Harrison. Maybe a game winner tonight will fit the bill. :)

Kentucky became the only team EVER to beat 3 out of the 4 Final Four teams from the previous season (Wichita State, Louisville, and Michigan.)

That, plus winning the silver medal overall is nothing to sneeze at.

Ahhhhhh choooooo.. Sorry but Calipari runs a dirty program. When he left Memphis they went on probation. You will see the same at Kentucky if he goes NBA as rumored.

Jim Calhoun ran a dirty program at Connecticut, also.

As of now, they won the 2014 gold, Kentucky won the 2014 silver, and neither is on probation.

Sour grapes.

Ran a dirty program how exactly?

Did he take advantage of rules that were later changed, yes but other schools were also doing it... He wasn't the only one.

He self reported Ricky Moore and another player receiving plane tickets back in the late 90s and that was the only time they broke any NCAA rules until the Nate Miles incident. And the Nate Miles incident involved too many text messages and phone calls which the NCAA amended the year after handing out sanctions to UConn. Nate Miles never even practiced with the team or even played 1 minute yet they received scholarship losses and sanctions that limited their recruiting.

The whole APR thing was a joke also. They were punished for bad academics for the 2006-2010 teams, mostly due to players transferring and leaving early for the NBA but not keeping their grades in good standing before leaving and receiving sanctions. The NCAA then decided to implement the rule that banned them in 2013 tourney without any window allowing them to attempt to qualify. If they used a 2 year rolling instead of 4 year rolling they would have been eligible. The 2011 team had a 980 APR out of possibly 1000 and the team was banned for the academics of players who weren't on the team. The current players all had perfect APR for the time they were enrolled at UConn.

The NCAA changed the rules and then punished UConn. It would be equivalent to a law being changed and if you broke that law in the past you were now be convicted. I forget the legal term for its something de facto.

Calhoun took an agriculture school from the Yankee league to the best bball program in BE history. They are now a pretty much a blue blood bball program because of what he built. He was a father to every single one of his players and till this day still keeps in touch and will help out any former player anyway he possibly can. He was abrasive and not liked by many cause of his personality but he was a fighter, winner, and had his players back no matter what.

Wooden, Coach K, Bob Knight and Calhoun are in a class of their own when talking of best college bball coaches of the modern era. No one has ever done a better job building a basketball program than Calhoun and he did it the right way. UConn was 1 of only 4 major schools to never have major sanctions in any sport unil the Nate Miles incident. Penn St was another until the Sandusky scandal. There are now only 2 major programs who have never committed major violations so no school can really say anything about being 100% clean.

I now for fact Calipari is a cheat. Have a buddy, now in the NBA, who was offered money from Cal when he was being recruited out of high school. He wasn't even an All American so I can only imagine what the top players are getting in return. UMass and Memphis felt the wrath of Cal. Kentucky will probably feel it at some point too.

Calhoun was sanctioned by the NCAA for a ?failure to create an atmosphere of compliance? within the basketball program at UConn.

In other words, he was a just a dirty coach.

The sanctions cost Connecticut scholarship reductions, recruiting restrictions, permanent dissociation from booster Josh Nochimson, and a ban from the 2013 postseason (specifically for the academic failures of Calhoun?s players). The trigger for all these punishments was the illegal recruitment of Nate Miles; clearly, they hit them for a lot more than that.

Calhoun retired immediately after that 2012 season, just prior to the postseason banning.

So, you can minimize Calhoun's transgressions all you want. He ran a dirty program, and got out and left the university holding the bag when everything hit the fan.

P.S. I just noticed your screen name and location. You did a very good job of championing your older brother, Dr. Calhoun.
