  1. 1. Do you trade Bedard for Jones, Tillman and Sherrill?

I want to know what Frobby thinks about it

I said no. Just not enough for Bedard. If they are willing to add quantity to this deal I would reconsider. Say something like Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, Chen, and Butler.

But I would really like to get Triunfel in this deal. We need position talent, not pitching. I would say yes to Jones, Triunfel, Chen, Butler(or another prospect).

Depends on what comes back. I don't expect much more than Gallagher and Cedeno for Roberts.

I'm not as high on Tillman as many on here.

I'd be a little higher on Tillman if his numbers looked a little better. I realize he's got "stuff", but the guy hasn't pitched outside of low A ball yet, has he? I think its very difficult to judge a guy THAT far away from the bigs.

I voted no on this poll. I want another player. I don't know why (well, yes I do!), but I want Tui after looking at his numbers in AA. He seems to be patient at the plate, and could be a guy we'd be able to plug into shortstop in 2009.

Now...if the offer was Jones, Triunfel, and Sherrill, that might make me take it.

I don't think Sherrill is being traded for with the intention of flipping him right now.

I think he is the closer if you get him.

I'd much rather groom a closer (a Hoey or even a retread) than waste a trade slot on one. We need one so everyone can pitch in their correct roles, but his actual effectiveness is not crucial right now.

I would make this trade because I think Jones and Tillman are too talented to pass up and because I think Sherrill will do a good job closing and that he could fetch a top prospect or 2 himself, either at the deadline or after the season.

My problem with it is that we only get one positional guy. We only really added 1 positional guy in the Tejada deal as well.

We need much more in terms of positional talent.

That being said, i don't go to ST with Bedard as an Oriole if these 3 are on the table.

The thing is, if Sherrill ends up fetching us 1 or 2 top prospects, making him the closer for a few months or the whole season becomes very beneficial to us.

That would be great. If you see that in the crystal ball, I'll make this trade with SEA.

I just don't know if we'll be in a great position as a team to showcase a closer to flip him for 2 prospects.

He pitched last year in one of the best parks for hitters in minor league baseball. And he pitched in A+ last year in a league favored heavily toward hitters. If we acquire him, I think he will be ready to pitch at AA this year.

And this is essentially why I would want Clement back in the Seattle deal.

Especially after the Tejada deal, this is where we need the biggest boost.

So, if AM gets more than those three players, then wouldn't you agree he has done a good job?

No love for Mike Costanzo?

    • He allowed only one batted ball over 95 MPH, commanding his cutter particularly well in this one. I think the cutter is the most critical pitch for Povich to take the next step. He’s never had issues getting punch outs, he needs to be able to pitch in the zone without relying too much on his fastball. It’s also a key weapon against RHP - if you don’t have a true plus breaking ball or fastball that can overcome the platoon splits (which I don’t think Povich does), you can only make it as a LHP SP through the strength of your cutter and changeup, which are more reverse/neutral splits.  His changeup is probably not good enough to carry him on its own, so it’s the cutter that brings the whole pitch mix together.
    • Agree he steps in the bucket. In theory should be a relatively easy fix.
    • His back or shoulder might give out first. Hardly any talented pitcher retires without some sort of serious injury recorded.
    • Plus Member  30.8k Posted January 24 Aram Leighton from Just Baseball on Holliday “He has the tendency to pull off of the ball a bit with his front side, which can minimize his ability to use the ground and his lower half to generate more power, especially on pitches on the outer half. The move does not impede his ability to consistently make contact thanks to his adjustability and feel for the barrel. Holliday projects as an easy plus hitter with more juice to tap into.“ https://www.justbaseball.com/prospects/baltimore-orioles-top-15-prospects-for-2024/
    • I guess my point is that the difference between 91 and 93 at the MLB level is probably negligible.  I would put significant emphasis on pitch sequencing, command and control, and the ability to land his secondary pitches.  If I am recalling his repertoire correctly his most important pitch is his change up.  And it was his ability to effectively throw a breaking pitch, I think it was a Slider, that really ushered in his pre-injury success.  Now you can make the case that 2 miles per hours of fastball velocity may make the change up an even more effective pitch.  I would not argue with you about that aspect, however I am not certain it explains much about his previous success.
    • From a thread in early January titled “Breaking down Jackson Holliday’s Swing”    January 4 Makes sense but I can’t think of many, if any, ML hitters who step like that with their lead foot.  It doesn’t look good to me but who can argue with the results?     Quote
