The difference is his fastball location, period. When he spots it, he's great. The ground balls tonight!

Extremely encouraging to see Chen pitch like he is capable of pitching. Extremely encouraging.

Had a killer curve tonight too!

Not so encouraging on the breaking stuff ... it didn't. He came up with a lot of outs on swing and miss fastballs - some not strikes. The braking balls still didn't look like they broke.

I disagree...

Not that he didn't get a lot of swings and misses on FBs, but dropped some filthy curves in too.

Buck was honest in the presser. Chen was fortunate tonight. A lot of hard hit balls right at people.

Yes he was fine, but to call that overpowering would be a reach. Still I'll take it every time. He was

a lot better than the other two starts too.

Yes, Buck did say that, and Chen also pointed out that the defense had a great game behind him. Some posters previously suggested that Chen had been a bit "unlucky" the first two games (.545 and .400 BABIP), so maybe the "luck" went the other way a bit this time, though 5 hits on 14 batted balls is still a healthy .357.

I never can understand some of the crap that Chen gets from some fans. Sure, he tires out and you'd like to see him finish the 7th after looking so good most of the game. But, he keeps you in games more often than not, which is what you'd hope for from a mid-rotation, average major league starter. Tonight was one of those games, and if he has games like those the majority of the time, I know I'll be a happy man.
