The essence of "freedom of speech" is what I said, though I have the historical perspective to understand that the government has violated that right with arguments like "preserving the Union" and "protecting U.S. citizens" in the past.

You said "The 1st amendment protects you from any repercussions from the government." The Patriot Act renders that statement false, by essentially saying that the Constitution can be trumped by executive order.

Still, my point remains. Too many people think that freedom of speech protects them from repercussions from their employer. It does not. If Adam had gone on an ugly tirade about how awful the umpires are, freedom of speech would not protect him from punishment.
