Should the O's fire Jim Presley?

Agree it's hard to teach old dogs new tricks.... but is anyone trying? I'd like to know if anyone does a post game video breakdown to show guys how far out of the zone some of the pitches they are swinging at? Or are the talking situations... like Adam you do understand that if the count is 0-2, 1-2, or even 2-2 the pitchers have been out of the zone 95% of the time against you>

Or how about posting a swing % for pitches out of the zone on the clubhouse bulletin board.

Or how about Buck giving some guys a game or two off after a particularly bad day of hacking at pitches no where near the zone.

I just wonder what Pressley is saying to them?

I think the point some other people are trying to make is that...if you don't actually know what Presley is or isn't doing, it's hard to justify starting a thread asking if the O's should fire him.

I'm trying to gauge your sarcasm in this post. A good hitter .270ish average should be able to get on base at a .330-.340 clip.

Gordo mistakenly thinks that someone thinks that walks are better then hits.

When of course the truth is that at bats that result in walks are better then the average result of at bats that don't end in walks.

Yes but imagine if our lead off hitter was doing this: .349 .482 .535. He's on pace to pay for almost a third of his total contract this year.

This is our batting first splits this season:

No, I think walks are a better bet than hits. Most ML players have the hand eye coordination to spoil a pitch. Far fewer have the hand eye coordination to square it up. Much easier to try for walks than hits and less risky. Putting the ball in play leads to outs. Walks also use up more P/PA. If every one on the team took this approach you'd be through the opposing team's entire pitching staff in less than 9 innings.

Too soon to consider a move like this, IMO. It's not like the offense overall has been awful, despite our pathetic BB rate. After a poor weekend, we are now 8th of 15 AL teams in runs/game, which is not good but not a firing offense at this stage of the season.

Forget Pressley.

If it were up to me, I would fire Showalter.

We had sole possession of first place on Friday, and we just gave it ...... GAVE IT back to the Yankees.

Poor leadership.

Failure to get the players motivated to beat the Twins.

Ron Johnson couldn't be any worse.

I think one of the assumptions people may have is that the hitting coach isn't already doing those things.

contrary to what stat geeks may think, they don't exactly have a whole lot of time to recognize a pitch and make a decision to swing the bat. Combine average MLB ability with respect to that and an aggressive approach at the plate, and voila! low OBP.

I have to wonder if the lunatics are running the asylum in terms of approach at the plate. add "all star" and things like "HR leader" and it justifies such a team wide approach.

maybe that's their strategy. maybe the hitting coach is adapting to the players. The biggest issue I see is it becomes a selfish game, where if the players are reasonably happy, they are making good money, and their stats are pretty good...they will keep going in that direction.

I don't know. I have to believe that they are trying, but they don't have the ability to recognize and not swing at bad pitches.

Instead of firing the hitting coach how about making deal with the weather man for warmer weather. That is all its going to take for the O's offense to take off.

The O's were 4th in the AL in runs scored last year and they added Cruz, who looks like an offensive force.

How about worrying about the pitching instead.

Walk rates so far, vs. career:

Davis 13.8%, 8.0%

Clevenger 12.9%, 7.6%

Cruz 9.8%, 7.9%

Markakis 8.3%, 9.3%

Flaherty 8.1%, 6.1%

Wieters 6.4%, 8.6%

Lough 4.3%, 3.6%

Young 3.8%, 4.2%

Hardy 3.5%, 7.0%

Jones 3.2%, 4.6%

Schoop 2.1%, 2.1%

Looking at some of the guys who are new to the team, Lough and Young haven't walked much in their careers, and Schoop is a very inexperienced rookie who has been rushed a bit. Thsoe guys are a big reason the team BB rate is so low. Jones and Hardy are slumping badly and you have to hope they'll draw a few more walks when they aren't pressing. Wieters' walk rate is a bit low right now, but they way he's hitting, we'll live with it.

Ron Johnson, not to be confused with Ron Swanson

    • Hard to say hiw Manny would have been as a SS if he’d played it right from the start in the majors.  Due to Hardy’s presence, he essentially played 3B for 5.3 seasons before ever getting a shot as full time SS.   By that time he’d lost some speed and range and was rusty at the ins and outs of SS. If 2012-14 Hardy was on this team, Gunnar would be at 3B, watching Hardy win his three Gold Gloves.
    • The Orioles are not going to re-sign Burnes and they prob shouldn't based on what he's going to ask for. Answer is Gunnar and it's not even really close.  Give the man whatever he wants and keep him indefinitely.
    • Gunnar. He will add an All Star nod this year and is on an MVP pace. Higher WAR in fewer PA.
    • Still a lot of things to shake out this year that IMO affects this decision.   1. Is Silent J the heir apparent to RF? 2. Is Beavers taking the next step and showing as a viable starting OF? 3. Is Fabian taking the next step to be a legit 4th OF who can play all 3 positions?   I will be very surprised if Taters is on the team next year. Honestly I think that if he is it will be due to failure of the young guys to show out. Good thing for us is we have enough of them that I don’t think that will happen.
    • He said after the game that he has five pitches, and if any three of them are working on a given night, he can mix them up enough to get batters out.
    • He’s had quite the turnaround vs. LHP on this road trip.  Hopefully it continues all year!
    • Gunnar's definitely looking like the MVP of the Orioles and looks like priority #1 to me to get an extension. Burnes age works against him, because the O's maybe don't want to go longer than 5-6 years at most, but I could be wrong there. The Witt extension kind of set the parameters of what Gunnar will probably want at minimum. 2025 25 Kansas City Royals $8,111,111     2026 26 Kansas City Royals $14,111,111     2027 27 Kansas City Royals $20,111,111     2028 28 Kansas City Royals $31,111,111     2029 29 Kansas City Royals $36,111,111     2030 30 Kansas City Royals $36,111,111     2031 31 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2032 32 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2033 33 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2034 34 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2035 35 Kansas City Royals *$33,000,000   $33M Team Option 2036 36 Kansas City Royals *$28,000,000   $28M Team Option 2037 37 Kansas City Royals *$28,000,000   $28M Team
