The question of ballhawking

Jones didn't have to curse at them. That's more than a little disappointing for me to hear.

If Jones were to curse in front of children I would have a huge issue with it.

For him to curse in front of 20 somethings who are acting like children, I don't mind at all.

Oh, okay. I need to reread/read more carefully. I though these were 14 and 15 year-olds. Doesn't bother me nearly as much but still disappointing to hear - for me personally. He could have handled it better, IMO.

If this story is true, Adam Jones comes across as a class A jerk. IMO, he was upset because the guys turned down his initial offer and he had to meet the guy in person to consummate the deal. While I find the "device" thing a bit over the top, "ball hawking" is obviously a part of every day life at OPACY. In the end, these guys made a business deal with Jones, IMO we would have never heard about it if he had treated these guys with a bit of respect.

Unfortunately in this day and age when everybody self-publishes instantaneously, AJ is at a real disadvantage. As a committed twitter user, he really should be aware of that. Even though I agree with your analysis, that's about the only criticism I can make about AJ in regard to this story. Those "fans" are world-class self-entitled creeps. No wonder AJ was upset.

I think Jones quickly realized that these were a couple of guys trying to turn getting a HR ball in to leverage for getting as much swag as they could, and he got rightfully offended at that notion. His comment said it all in that respect. He hit the darn thing, all they did was retrieve a ball.

Well, I'll just say that all involved ( including AJ) come off like self entitled creeps in this story.

Of course he did.

If he was that offended by the demands he should have said no to the deal.

Instead he acted like a petulant child when he gave up the "swag".

All true.

Another way to possibly look at it, if you are Jones, is to say, man, these kids went to all this trouble to get some stuff with my signature on it. They must be be pretty big fans and think I'm pretty awesome. Maybe I can take two minutes to not curse at them and then be on my way.

And to be clear, I would never do any of the crap these kids did. I'm an Adam Jones fan, I think he's a cool dude and I'm glad he signed long term with the O's. But, I have no desire to take any pictures with any ball player, let alone even meet one. I totally don't get that fascination some people have. Not to judge of course. :D

He may not have said yes to the deal, it could have been brokered somewhat without his input. Which would also be annoying. I don't disagree with you that he carried himself poorly, but he had a small social gaffe. The other two were bragging about being completely juvenile.

Both sides acting badly. I have a LOT more sympathy for Jones.

CoC, I have no sympathy for either side.

These guys have an unusual hobby that takes advantage of the players and their accomplishments.

I really wonder what they'll ask from Caleb Joseph if they use their device to nab his first home run.

Jones chose to deal with these guys, and he should have made the best out of the situation.

he could have treated these guys decently for five minutes and we never would have heard about it.

I don't think that these guys would have been brought into the clubhouse area and met by Jones if he was not on board with it.

I'm not saying he was completely in the dark, just that some of the particulars were made with certain liberties.

    • Holy moley. 10 HR and 30 RBI… through April 19.
    • I guess we were watching a different outing.
    • You try to sign long term Gunnar and GR.  Wait and see on the others. As for Adley?   I would not sign him to a long term contract.  I hate to say it because I love the guy but he just does not seem worth what he is going to ask for imo.
    • I am not worried about Means AS LONG AS HE IS HEALTHY.   Big if.  But he knows what he is doing getting ready for what him is his spring training.  If he does this his first 2 starts or so?    Then I worry.
    • I had never seen him in a live at bat until I saw him at his first spring training at bat this year.  And I mean his very first at bat.   He struck out swinging on like 4 pitches and being honest looked completely over matched.  I remember thinking....."hmmmm that seems odd for a guy so highly touted".   He just seemed like he had no idea what he was doing.   But then I never really saw another live at bat from him again all spring training and he ended up doing pretty well.  However every at bat I have seen of him since he got called up?  Looked like that first spring training at bat.  He looks like my wife trying to hit a major league fastball.  He has no idea what he is doing. I have never seen someone so good against minor league players and yet so bad against major league players.  Just a huge discrepancy.   Has to be psychological.   He looks completely intimidated.
    • And who is this somebody other than Means or Flarerty that would help us in the playoffs. Also remember Bradish and Grod did not help us in the Playoffs. So I guess It was unwise to wait on those 2. Plus Bradish is hurt and uncertain going foward( a la Means) Yeah you piled on.
    • I will say I am surprised at how utterly useless/helpless JH looks after he got called up.   Not just surprised. Stunned is a better word. This is not an 7th round pick who struggled for years in the minors.   This is the #1 pick from 2 years ago who has dominated his entire life in the game of baseball. Yet he looks like a player in 8th grade playing against seniors in HS.  He can barely make any contact and even his fielding and throwing is very iffy. It is like he took up the game of baseball within the last year.   A complete novice.   This has to be mental because even the worst of the worst can make more contact than he is.  He is FLAILING.   No way that is all physical.    At this point you send him down.   No questions asked.   I was more than willing to let him get through this if he SHOWED ANY SIGNS of life.  But he just doesn't.   He looks pathetic.    Manny Machado he is not.   Send him down for at least 3 months.   Bring up Mayo.  Or anyone really.  It is better than what he is offering.
