3 Priorities:

1. 2B

Weeks or Zobrist.

Both are free agents after the season which allows Schoop to start against next season. Weeks would be pretty cheap.

2. LH bat

Smith, Joyce, or Dunn

All have great walk rates and can really mash righties. Smith and Dunn are both free agents this season. Smith and Joyce can both play the field.

3. Bullpen help

Soria, Benoit, Torres, Thatcher

This depends on Matusz and Hunter. We need both of these guys to be effective or they need to be replaced. Soria and Thatcher are free agents after the season.

My ideal scenario:

Weeks, Smith, and Soria.

Weeks should come fairly cheap. His walk rate is outstanding and he brings speed. Low risk, high reward. Smith can start vs. Righties and come off the bench vs. Lefties. Soria would be a great add to the back of the pen. DOD, Webb, Soria, and Britton in the back end? Holy cow. All 3 are free agents as well.

I don't think we need bullpen help with Hunter looking like he did last year since comming of the Dl we are fine there. Brach has been very solid as well. I am pretty confident in the four righties we have right now in Webb O'Day Hunter and Brach. You have Zach as a closer and then have TJ for the pen as a long man. When Bud comes back you can move Gonzo to the pen and put him as long man and TJ takes over for Brian if he struggles.

Don't forget Wolf and Rapada.

I think 2B and a LH bat should be the priority but I still think another high leverage BP arm could be of use. Only Britton, DOD, and Webb can really be trusted in high leverage situations right now though with Hunter and Matusz not being the same.

I like Smith and Soria but Weeks... uy, he's bad defensively. I mean AWFUL. And he's right handed... are there any lefty 2B that could be available? Also Smith would spell the end of Delmon Young on the team so perhaps he could be traded somewhere for a bag of magic beans.

I think DD trades for another BP arm. He doesn't leave things to chance.

Agreed.

Well I figured Weeks would barely cost anything. I don't think they'd want anyone that isn't a FA after this season so that Schoop could start next season. Murphy is LH, so is Zobrist, but they'd both cost a ton. Just figured they could probably get Weeks/Soria/Smith for a similar level of assets as they could get Murphy or Zobrist and one of Soria/Smith.

Weeks isn't perfect but he will probably OPS .730 at the very least which is almost .150 points higher than the production we are receiving right now. And his walk eate is great and he has good speed. He could be very good in the 2nd half or very bad, but he will be cheap and worth the (little) risk IMO.

The Brewers have 50 wins and are making a push, and I seriously doubt they would give away half their platoon. Scooter Gennett and Weeks have combined for a 2.3 WAR. the Crew are not sure Gennett can hit lefties, and I doubt they want to roll those dice in a pennant chase. I know Weeks was in rumors with the Mets and Rangers earlier this year, but what makes you think he's available? (No sarcasm, haven't seen a rumor about him lately).

Also, in his 10 year career, Weeks has had 2 years where he had not missed significant time (at least 30 games). His OPS has been regressing for the last four years and last year was in the .660 neighborhood. He's jumped 100 points this year in a platoon where he was terrible in April, great in May and good in June. He's streaky and frustrating and expensive, and your .730 prediction is neither out of the question (that was his 2012 ops) nor in the bag. Out of the platoon and in a new league with a new team, he could go right back to the .210 hitter he was last year. Oh, and his defense is terrible, leading me to believe Buck would have a problem with the move.

Also, he could cost 6.5 million if he plays everyday (his contract has a mill buyout for reaching 400 pa), leading me to question the financial aspect.

I don't think they'll just throw him away but I do think they would be more than happy to trade him for anything decent. Gennett has been fantastic for them.

Weeks had a .663 OPS last season. But he's at .768 this season and only one other time in his career besides last season was it below .767 (.728 in 2012).

He'd be a huge boost IMO. Maybe offer Lombo for him?

    • Baseball’s a funny game.  We spend 1.4M on Carter Young who played at D1 powerhouse Vanderbilt and he hasn’t looked too good so far in his pro career.  A year later in the 20th round, we pick Vazquez from North Greenville University (sorry. Never heard of it), sign him for 30k and he puts up an .822 OPS at Delmarva.  This year both Vazquez and Young are at Aberdeen and it’s not too difficult to guess which one is the better prospect. In 46 PA, Vazquez has 12 walks to 7 strikeouts and a .933 OPS.  In addition, he’s stolen 7 bases in 8 tries.   @Tony-OH also has said he’s a good defensive SS. 2023 draft.  Etzel in the 10th.  Vazquez in the 20th.  Nice job, scouts.
    • They may be a way to start him out. But I hope that is not the plan long term. If you had a chance to listen to Hyde's comments they appear to be trying to build Bradish back up into a regular starter. He talked about him building toward 80 pitches in his next rehab outing. In order for this team to get where it wants to go, we will need the Bradish of last year (or a comparable pitcher to that).
    • Hopefully Means gets a rehab extension for another 30 days. If not, this seems right to me. Does Bradish go to the pen, or does he start with one of Suarez, Kremer, or Irvin pushed to the pen? I kind of like Bradish as an opener with Irvin backing him up most of his starts.
    • He threw that fastball right down the shoot on a 1-2 count. That was not a case of Trout being Trout. It was a case of horrible location. I have to believe that it was not his intention to throw it there after he watched us beat Trout several times the night before with hard stuff up in the zone (Trout's only weakness). Maybe the extra day messed up something with Rodriguez's ability to execute? Maybe he just had a bad night? But this was not the case of the Angels being good. It was Grayson who was really bad.
    • But, but they lost. They absorbed a loss.
    • That’s probably true and Elias said he also didn’t want to call him up if he wasn’t ready to be an everyday player.   So ………. something to keep an eye on.
    • Yea he has looked bad but while it’s fair to point that out, it’s also fair to point that some of this could be attributed to rust, an injury, not having a real ST, not playing in the field as much (I assume since he’s not catching?), etc…I think his timing is likely off and he’s working himself back into things. He has played 15 games. He has a multi hit game in 1/3 of his game so far. You point out all the Ks…what’s funny is all the Ks came in 5 games and he hasn’t struck out the last 4. To me the only thing that bothers me as of right now is the zero walks but it’s not something that would concern me long term.
