I'm not particularly surprised...you should absolutely never intentionally throw a bat at another player (or anyone) and the intent was pretty clear. The part about all of this that bugs me is that Abad didn't also get suspended...his intent was also pretty clear and if anyone has any doubts after the first pitch, the second one in the same place is plenty of evidence. Throwing at Manny's knee isn't sending a message, it's an attempt at ending his season and potentially his career. Bad move on MLBs behalf to pick sides on this.

They got to let the Red Sox get back into the race and the Yanks so they can keep that rivalry. We can not have the Jays and Orioles as the race down the stretch that would be horrible for baseball. I had no problem for the 5 games and then a hearing should have reduced it to 3-4. The game for friday is a joke. Players get in arguements many times during a game and no suspension. No punches were thrown or even any pushing yet yelling get a suspension. WOW..

Can't help but think that the public comments by Showalter, Duquette and Machado about their expectations that the days would be reduced pissed off the league office. Clearly they are sending a message, to Manny, and to the O's management.

I'd just say that if his intent was to throw the bat at Abad, he did a piss poor job of it.

He was just starting to get in a nice groove at the plate and his defense is still top of the league. Hopefully we can fill that hole at third for a week and stay afloat in the east.

I too was hoping for 3 games but oh well. Lesson learned for the young guy.

Very surprised. Hey, if Manny had really wanted to hit Abad with the bat it would have gone out in the direction of the mound. The league's obviously decided to make a show of this one, but I wonder if it will only deepen Oriole ill-will toward the A's, with some nasty consequences, especially considering what Abad got away with. Maybe there'll be a few, more convincingly "slippery" bats flying out of O's hands in upcoming series.

Who did he throw the bat at?

Manny really needs to work on his bat toss since the bat didn't land particularly close to anyone.

He obviously threw the bat intentionally but I don't think you can make a case that he threw it at someone.

Saturday, before season ticket holders, Duquette referred to the "gross inequity" in the punishments doled out to Machado and Abad. I'm sure MLB enjoyed his criticism and the rest of the comments made to the media. I know it was his right to appeal but he shouldn't have. Clearly, Machado was not convincing in his appeal. He needs to serve the 5 games, learn from it and grow up.
