I can't imagine the team landing an Ian Kennedy type starter with just Gonzalez. Gonzo himself is looking at being demoted to the pen.

I think the Orioles should look hard at trading for Joakim Soria. I think they could get him without trading one of the stud prospects, and Gonzalez could be part of the return. Boy would he make the bullpen strong. He's also got a team option for 2015 at $7 mil.

True, if Gonzo goes, it will be a multiple trade package.

Unless we are getting a true TOR starter, then I would not trade Gonzalez.

We are not getting a TOR starter for Gonzalez.

Maybe Gonzalez + Bundy or Harvey or Gausman

I just don't see them trading any of the big prospects away at this point, so no trade involving Gonzalez is going to bring in a TOR starter.

Agree with this, which is why we should not trade Gonzo for a Burnett or Kennedy. Neither of them is a TOR starter.

Gonzalez has proven himself to be a legit member of a MLB starting rotation (I think he may have even won a game for us in the postseason in 2012). Trading him (as part of a package) for anything less than a legit TOR starter would be dumb IMO. I don't think Dan would do it.

I'm a huge Gonzo homer obviously, but what about the past east failures of a guy like Burnett and Kennedy (much SSS and younger, but still) suggests that they'll survive in the now resurgent AL BEast. The Yankee Slayer has proven that he can deal in the division.

Take a peak at what Phil McCracken Hughes is doing in MSP to see how successful pitchers are outside the division.

Gonzalez would net very little. He is more valuable to the Orioles as a member of the organization than he would be in a trade. I have no problem including him in a trade that nets an upgrade somewhere but I have trouble seeing a team valuing Gonzalez.

The Rockies asking for Gausman for Jorge De La Rosa is hilarious. Jorge De La Rosa would be the 4th or 5th starter on this team, has no potential for improvement, has never pitched more than 185 innings, and has a career 4.67 ERA. Gausman is arguably a better pitcher already and has a ceiling that is about three times as high as Jorge De La Rosa ever came close to. I have no interest in Jorge De La Rosa whatsoever so I hope nothing happens there.

I also don't want this team to make a trade for the back of a rotation starter just to make a trade. I know realistically we aren't getting a TOR guy. In the end I expect some moves for BP help and that's about it.

This. Gonzo has shown that he can hang with the AL East and I think getting rid of him for a guy like Kennedy would be a mistake. Unless there is another move up DD's sleeve, this move would seem to be, at best, a wash.

Even a backend starter is worth something if he is making 529K and is under team control for three more seasons.

    • I would be happy with a trade of Cowser and Ortiz for Cease, but I’m not too stuck on Cease.  There are other guys who fit the bill.  But if we end the offseason without a significant pitching addition and could have gotten Cease for those two, I’ll be unhappy about it.

    • Looks like Nick Martinez is also pulling $13mm AAV - from Cincinnati, 2-years and an opt-out in his case according to early reports. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39010979/reds-rhp-nick-martinez-agree-26m-deal-sources-say Severino and Martinez both ~30% above Fangraphs crowdsourced guesses.
