Boof Bonser never played for the Orioles. How about Rocky Cherry?

Sorry! I broke the rules and named a non-Oriole and you caught me! :) I just can't help but love the name Boof Bonser, let's trade for him (just kidding). Good call on Rocky Cherry. Are there any former Orioles names that come close to that?

    • .800 isn't an arbitrary threshold.  It's pretty much a benchmark for a productive hitter.   I don't know what you mean by "quality ML bat" and "knows how to hit."  Like, I think I know what you mean, but those are platitudes that get thrown around far too often to the point that they don't mean anything at all.  But when I see him flail away on a low and outside slider for the umpteenth time, I don't necessarily consider that a quality ML bat who knows how to hit.  He can run into a fastball from time to time and crush mistakes, but I don't know if I'd put him in the category of a "professional hitter" like I would for Adley. I agree that Mounty has a place here, but I also don't find myself considering him super core member of the team.  He's a fan favorite and understandably so, and that's fine, per your comp to Trey Mancini.  But Mancini never was long for this team, I don't believe Mountcastle is either.
    • I expected to see Vespi yesterday. Get him some time in a blowout game so he keeps other arms out and will be optioned when Webb gets back.
    • Who said I was mad at him?
    • And somehow we were still outdone by the Diamondbacks.  Not to sound bitter or anything. 😆
    • Depends on what you are looking for.  To the average fan, today's game was not a good one. To an O's fan, it's almost the best it can be. If you are looking for drama, excitement, back and forth with some kind of walk off, then it's not the best. But if you are like me, and enjoy a laugher for the O's, then it was definitely great.
    • I don't disagree on Mateo versus Nevin, but that's more a testament to how poorly I view Nevin much more than any ringing endorsement of Mateo.  While Mateo will have a game here and there where he looks great, and even put together stretches of a few weeks where he's MVP caliber for that short stretch, over the course of 162 games he's not going to bring much value to the team.  The bat, overall, is just too poor to really carry him playing as often as he did last year.  A Mateo who gets 100-200 at bats can be valuable.  One that gets 300+ at bats is going to hurt.  But considering the current roster makeup, Mateo is going to play a bunch.  For good or for ill.  Ride the good as long as you can, as the ill is certainly coming with him.  His bat isn't consistently great, good or even average, and his defense suffers if he doesn't get consistent playing time, which his bat doesn't show he should get.  Thus you get a poor hitting utility player whose defense is also regressing.  Not a good formula.  He had a good opening day, and I hope he stays good/above average as long as he's getting playing time as I want the Os to win.  But don't expect it to continue.
