He knew the answer. He tried, and failed, to make a point.

Actually, I agree with what he had said originally.

The official scorer cannot assume a double play, but we can.

Tillman was responsible for the first baserunner getting on base, but then Schoop blew what should have been a double play ball.

So instead of 2 outs with nobody on base, there were runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out, because of Schoop's misplay.

Fortunately, Tillman worked out of it anyway, although the muff did wind up elevating his overall pitch-count.
