Astros Fire Bo Porter and Dave Trembley

I remember when Lawless hit a home run in Game Four of the 1987 World Series.

Al Michaels was incredulous, because Lawless had only hit 1 home run in his entire major league career at that point. When they showed a replay of the home run after the inning ended, Michaels simply said, "Lawless!"

I also remember that Lawless knew that it was a home run as soon as he completed his swing, and he stared at the ball as it was leaving the park, and then flipped his bat when it went out, like a 35 HR-per-year guy would. :laughlol:

They remind me of Dave Ritterpusch and his tests. God bless Flanny.

I still like the idea of Dave Ritterpusch. The Orioles of that era were about as lacking in innovation as any organization ever, they did everything like they were reading from a 1985 How to Run a Traditional Baseball Organization handbook. And doing everything badly, falling farther behind the world by the minute. Ritterpusch's tests were badly needed out-of-the-box thinking, even if maybe a little misguided.

If you're going to win 65 games a year who cares if people laugh at you for trying weird stuff? The Orioles of 10 years ago thought exactly the opposite - if we're going to win 65 games a year we're at least going to keep our dignity among the old guard.

I said this before, when I said the Astros stink and will for some time and was told that their future was very bright, lots of good prospects on the farm.

My response then and still valid, as long as their FO is the same, they will never achieve any success.

This is a ridiculous post. Truly ridiculous.

I'll take their front office over just about anyone's in baseball. They have lots of forward thinking people. Luhnow is from the Cards. What is your problem with them exactly?

Luhnow is actually the only one I do not care for. I think they have some other spectacular people.

Luhnow came from the successful St. Louis Cardinals player development program, but his strong personality didn't always mesh smoothly with Cardinals GM John Mozeliak.

This year, Luhnow has run afoul of agents and the players' union over his handling of unsuccessful negotiations with draft picks, including first overall selection Brady Aiken. The Astros were unable to sign Aiken, Brady Nix and Mac Marshall. Possible grievances over the Aiken and Nix cases are pending.

Other major league front offices were upset earlier when a security breach resulted in confidential logs of trade talks appearing on Deadspin.

Excellent and revealing interview with Dave Trembley. I really enjoyed this inside view.

Dave will not be without a team long. Great baseball guy.

I listened to the whole thing on MLB radio. It was a great interview. One of the best I've heard in awhile. DT was really insightful and candid but somehow managed to tightrope and not cross the line. He is a pretty smart guy. Like you said, I expect he'll find a job pretty quick.

Just curious, what did you think of him when he managed the Orioles?

Well, I was a bit biased because I knew Dave from his time managing the Baysox and always really liked him. Saying that, Dave was dealt a pretty tough hand here in Baltimore.

He was given a team that was full of me-first prima donnas who were not all that talented and had limited support from management or ownership. In other words, he really didn't have the power he needed to get things changed.

Dave in one of the nicest guys you will meet, but in the minors, he seemed to have a more authoritative demeanor with his players. Once he got to the big leagues, the players may not have had the same respect for him and it was tough to gain that respect when some players viewed him as a "minor league" guy.

Saying that, I thought Dave did a as good a job as anyone in his situation could have done. Obviously, bringing in someone with the credentials of Buck Showalter was a great thing for this organization, but Dave is certainly the kind of baseball man that will do a great job in any role he's given.

My biggest issue with Trembley was that his demeanor and body language changed when the team got on a losing skid. It always seemed his teams would be battling to the level of their talent, but when things started to go wrong, they would snowball and Trembley couldn't stop it. Buck never seems the slightest bit panicked when things aren't going well, and then they don't go poorly for long. Undoubtledly, he has much better talent to worth with. But he also sets a confident tone that perseveres even in bad times.

Buck has also played a major part in attracting said talent.
