I didn't see Games 2 and 3 of the Tampa series and didn't realize he'd made an error in each of those games. Still, he's only made 7 errors on the year, dividing his time between three positions. That's a pretty good showing IMO.

Only 7 errors yes, but he has only played 85 games too. Those were 2 very ugly errors in TB.

Flaherty takes his work seriously. Before the 10th inning on Sunday, after having just made his second throwing error in two consecutive games, he did his pre-inning warmups from about 20 feet on the turf in left field, throwing bullets to Davis. He wanted to make sure that didn't happen again.

Certainly a step down from last season.

He had a different role last season, because Hardy started 159 games and Manny started 156. So, Flaherty played 2B the vast majority of the time he played, starting only 3 times at SS and 3 times at 3B. This year, Flaherty has 26 starts at 2B, 23 at 3B, 15 at SS and has come in as a defensive sub many times as well. That's much more difficult.

Haha anybody would do that. That's what practice before the game is for, to make sure u don't make any dumb errors to cost yourself the game in the first place

Which does not change the fact that his defense is a step down from where it was last season.

Flaherty has been inconsistent with the glove lately? How so? I think he'd been a superb defensive backup.

The team has never had a losing season with Flaherty on the roster. There, I said it. ;)

Never thought about that, but you'r right. Flaherty is the reason we win! :D

Seriously though, I'll never understand what people want from their utility guy. How many utility guys can player every infield position effectively, including shortstop than can go play corner outfield if you need. He'll pop an occasional homer and even go through a hot streak once in awhile. As others have said, if he could hit consistently he's be a starter somewhere. Sign me up for more Flaherty!

So if he is as irreplaceable as you say he is, then this should come as a breeze to him

But what's wrong with just trying to think about someone out there that might have an edge on what we have? Isn't that the point? To get better any way we can?

I know those two ugly errors in T.B. are fresh in everybody's mind.

But, Flash has made some difficult plays this season.

So if you look at his entire body of work this season, you still think he is a step down this season?

I can't speak to the errors this weekend that I didn't see, but 7 errors in 85 games (64 starts) isn't a lot. This year, in about 143 games, the league average is 10 errors at 2B (.07/game), 17 errors a 3B (.12/game), and 16 errors at SS (.11/game). For Flaherty, you have to look at innings played since he as so many games as a sub. He averaging about .08 errors/9 innings at 2B and 3B, and .18 at SS. I think that's pretty good for a guy who doesn't get to settle in at one position.
