My guess is both. There has not been one yet. I'll consider it a possibility after the first one.

The unions may not like them but they agreed to them in the last bargaining session. The agents are the ones who negotiate the contracts. Last year I'll bet there were more than a few regrets at not accepting the QOs.

They may not like them and they may have made the concession with the idea that it would only be a tether for a very few mid level free agents and still recommend non acceptance. A good way to compromise. Get what you want in the negotiation and use the union power to limit what is given in return.

I can see that, but it's still only their idea. The agents and players are going to do what is in their interest and I can't believe some of them aren't reconsidering their previous stance on the QO itself.

Could be. We will see if anyone takes one.

As others have said, QO Hardy. If he declines, try to sign Headley for one year (or two at most). If Headley won't agree to that, then maybe revisit Hardy or pursue other SS/3B options.

Whatever happens, I think it's fine for the Orioles to be flexible with Machado and not limit him to one position or another. Assuming Manny still wants to play SS, of course, make the best deal you can. If it's a 3B, then that's fine, I think the risk is worth it. You want the best left-side of the infield you can get. The best combination of good to great defense combined with competent offense (.240-.250 AVG at least, with at least .310-320ish OBP) should be what you're looking for in a SS/3B FA or trade. Slugging would be nice but I'd rather have decent OBP quite honestly.

I would bring back Flash again to spell or replace the left side or 2B in the event of an injury. His versatility is underrated and he can provide at least replacement-level WAR at any of these positions...which isn't something to take for granted in a util-man. I would only make Flash a starter if by some miracle you're able to re-sign Cruz...then you could probably take the hit to your offense (and in that scenario if you're real hard up for offense you could every fifth game or so play Davis at third with Manny at short and Pearce at first). Would be interesting if they go that route to see whether Manny would move to short with Flash going to 3rd or they keep Flash at short.

Especially since Manny is coming back from another knee injury I just can't fathom any scenario where the O's think about moving him off of 3rd for 2015.

not trying to derail the discussion but that's how I see it. Headley would be intriguing otherwise, but the only way we look at adding more 3B is if something happens to Manny to slow his recovery.

The real question is SS, and that will depend on if Hardy is kept.........my gut keeps telling me he will be too expensive. :(

I had thought since 2012 that Manny would shift to SS at the end of Hardy's contract...until the second knee operation changed my mind. After Machado's most recent injury, I thought the Orioles would probably re-sign Hardy...until the back started acting up again. Now, I can't see re-signing Hardy or moving Manny to SS. Despite Headley's good defensive numbers, I do not foresee the Orioles signing him.

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
