Quick Question

Why is the Nats' first game this year a one-game series against the Braves? Makes zero sense.

They very much wanted to showcase their new park on the first national TV game of the season. MLB wanted to oblige them, but not have to rearrange the entire league's schedule for April, so they're treating it like an overseas game (sort of).

Well, why didn't they just schedule the first series of the year in DC against Atlanta or did the Nats express this desire long after the schedule had been released?

Not their turn. Remember that the Orioles opened on the road last year, and will open at home this year. MLB (and the teams as well, I'd bet) wants to avoid having the Orioles and Nationals home at the same time.

We'll likely see alternating home openers for the duration.

Ahh, makes sense now. Thanks.
