2014 #5 Prospect: Dariel Alvarez

Yeah, I'm not too worried about his power. The bigger worry is whether his "swing at everything" propensity will cause his OBP to deteriorate further as he faces more sophisticated pitchers.

I was happy to read about Alvarez's attitude and being a "Buck kind of guy." That goes a long way.

And, I am five for five so far.

Maybe you figured me out after all these years! :D

Is anyone else bummed that this is our 5th best prospect??

Not really. The MLB team is young. It doesn't have many holes. If there was ever a time to not worry about prospect depth, its now.

The system may be thin, but there is some quality at the top.

I don't think his low OBP and low power make him an adequate regular. He's going to have to show significantly more power at AAA to get a shot at anything more than a utility player, imo.

Yeah. I like what I have seen of him in person. He has power. Just not full grown power yet. I think this off season will help him.

No. Not at all. Better than having Avery and Hoes there.

Just for fun, here's everyone who has been ranked in the top 5 in since 2010.

Bundy (no. 1 in 2011-14)

Machado (no. 1 in 2010, 2 in 2011)

Gausman (no. 2 in 2012-13)

Britton (no. 2 in 2010)

Harvey (no. 2 in 2014, 3 in 2013)

Sisco (no. 3 in 2014)

Schoop (no. 3 in 2011-12, 5 in 2013)

Hoes (no. 3 in 2010, 4 in 2011)

Davies (no. 4 in 2014)

Rodriguez (no. 4 in 2013, no. 5 in 2012)

Delmonico (no. 4 in 2011-12)

Givens (no. 4 in 2010)

Alvarez (no. 5 in 2014)

Avery (no. 5 in 2010)

The 2010 list had Hoes, Givens and Avery at 3-4-5.

Now that makes me very happy with where we are right now. Thanks.

I have mixed feelings. Bundy has been no. 1 four years in a row, but his injury and his post-injury performance make him a less compelling prospect than he was previously. Harvey's a decent no. 2, but the fact that he was shut down in August is a concern, and he's further away from the majors than Machado, Britton and Gausman were when they were no. 2, and not as highly ranked a prospect. I like Sisco at 3 considering the year he just had, but again, he's a very long way from the majors. As to Davies and Alvarez, they appear to be better than Hoes/Givens/Avery, but I'd take last year's 4 and 5 (EdRod/Schoop) over them. Overall, the list is weaker than a year ago, though there are still some high-upside guys here.

And we still have Jomar, Ofelky Peralta, and Jon Keller.

It's a pretty weak system compared to the recent past. Avery/Hoes were there because of potential - just because they didn't pan out doesn't mean they did not have quality prospect status at one point.

Our GM has, IMO, sacrificed a good part of our future to make the playoffs. The major league team was strong this year and could be a contender again next year, but we have traded away or forfeited Hader, EdRod, a first round pick, first round supplemental and a second round pick.

It is pure fiction to hint this year's list of prospects holds up against most of the recent vintages of the past five plus years or the relative standing of our current prospects versus other teams.

I don't follow prospects as much as a lot on here, but I never really thought of Avery/Hoes as "quality prospects".

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
