I'm not saying that Japanese baseball is on par with the MLB but it does seem that any time there is a Japan v US competition Japan comes out on top (no hitter today, first two WBC's won by Japan)

I think that's similar to the effect you'd see when Negro League teams played MLB teams 75 years ago. The Negro League team often saw this as their chance to really show what they were made of and went all out to win, while the MLB team looked at it as an exhibition to make a little extra cash. There's little upside for the MLB teams, who go in expecting to be the best and a win is just reinforcing the status quo. The WBC rosters reflect that. It's a true NPB all star team playing whatever American MLBers who couldn't come up with an injury.
