Toronto looking for New President to be Duquette.

Question for those who say the O's should just let Duquette go and get it over ASAP.

Should they drag the process out until they have a plan for what they are going to do next or just say, "to heck with it," let Duquette go, and then begin a search for a new GM?

Richard Justice was just on Mad Dog MLB network said it's gonna have to be a high price for the Orioles to let Dan go.

Seems even the talking heads can't agree what he's worth. I can just imagine the O's and Jays in discussions

"We'll give you this throwaway AAA guy for Dan"

"We want Marcus Stroman and Daniel Norris"

"...We'll get back to you on that."

A little common sense please. It would have been very simple to say "I'm not interested in the Toronto job. I have a 4 year contract with Baltimore. I want to stay here for the next 4 years". He didn't say that and everyone except you knows why.

If you want to preach common sense, then you should know he's certainly interested in the Toronto job. Who wouldn't be interested in a major promotion? He still said "the right things" when it was brought up. Maybe Angelos lets him go, maybe he doesn't. I have no doubt Dan wants the job.

So many people don't realize how much Dan and Buck mean to the O's and their fans. They are seen as the saviours. I know how loud the fans cheered for Buck during the introductions of game one of the ALDS, louder than any player. After all the losing we have been through, they have brought us out. They are worth far more to us than to any other team.

He certainly did say that he had every intention of fulfilling his contract. He never flat out said he didn't want the Jays job, but every other point in the post I quoted he indeed did say on MLB Radio.

Seabird said Duquette could have diffused the situation by saying he had no interest in the Toronto job. You responded by saying he had already said that at the Winter Meetings and some wisecrack about wanting him to repeat it every 10 minutes. I'm just pointing out that he never said it in the first place.

You conveniently(?)forgot a post. I was pointing to his entire comment, not the first sentence that you keep posting.

Nice work.

Maybe PA724 is thinking of something else, but I definitely do not remember a definitive statement.

PA724 - Yes, I think DD should make a very, very definitive statement if he truly intends to stay.

In regards to RZNJ' post, that might be it.

I find a report where they quoted him saying he has always honored his contracts. So maybe I just took it as he was committed to honoring his current one.

To Ohfan, even if he didnt definitively give a answer where there was no grey area, I believe he is a stand up guy and will honor his contract if the Os don't trade him. Also, it's not up to DD so even if he wanted to go, he isn't in control of that at this moment.

Even if he threw a temper tantrum and said trade me or a quit, I'm sure Angelos is the type to call his bluff and let him sit on the couch for four years. So this shouldn't be an issue our concern until DD quits or is traded. This to me, is currently a non issue.

I'm more worried about his next move for the Os rather than worrying if he will be here in two months, or even next year. I'll care when that time comes. And I feel everyone else should approach it the same way. But that's a long shot, I'm sure.

And to

Until this all plays out, will someone else be doing the FA signings and/or trades or is the entire FO kinda in flux right now?

Full control will be handed over to the OH....but probably Brady and Buck would be the ones making decisions should anything come of this mess.

What are you talking about? Literally one person wrote that - Flacco Machado - and he was immediately laughed at by four straight posts. Nobody is expecting this big of a return that has a clue. You've been all over this thread so you must know that.

I would think someone who isn't up to speed on basic contract law enough to know that DD can't just resign would take a less authoritative approach. I've been stifling myself for a day and I'm not trying to be mean, but don't start painting us "fans" as expecting stuff that clearly isn't so.

The rational part of me agrees with this very much. However, the likelihood that Potter would have gotten the MASN deal from MLB/Washington would likely have been described by casual fans at the time in the same fashion...i.e. "no way he gets that much." Look at the way that he pushed Sarasota almost to the brink of calling off the deal for the spring training park in order to extract the maximum concessions. Potter fully realizes that he now has Toronto by the short hairs. Either now they don't get their guy (which says to DD, look they really didn't want you that much) or they give up way too much. Angelos knows this triangulation dynamic much better than any non lawyer novice like us. IMHO, Potter's public relations statements are part of his strategy that will extract a maximum penalty which will be far beyond what the pundits are saying (or otherwise DD will stay).

People have asked repeatedly in this thread who would be handling the discussions of compensation on the O's part. That's an interesting question, with some obvious answers. But who do you think is handling such discussions on behalf of the Blue Jays, a GM and CEO who are likely to lose their jobs if agreement is reached? What would their incentive be for reaching agreement? Or someone above both of them in the Rogers group, who may not know that much about the details of Blue Jays' prospects?

This is what I'm wondering. How could Alex Anthopoulos be feeling good about Toronto wanting Duquette, who will want to shape the organization from a player personnel standpoint? Pretty sure Beeston has stayed more on the business side of things.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
