Ed Rogers attempts a Coup D'etat

Your point may be correct, but I was responding to this -

I was merely stating the fact that Gillick was not held against his will and wasn't fired. When his contract was up he wanted out, and so he left. The situation was very different with Davey Johnson, who Angelos wanted out because of the conflict of interest with his wife's charity.

And Johnson's feisty attitude didn't mesh well with Potter's view of the ideal employee.

“...under new Rogers boss Guy Laurence, both Edward Rogers and his sister Melinda have been removed from the day-to-day operations of Rogers Communications even though they are major share holders in the company.”

Bob Elliott

Edward Rogers remains a member of the Rogers Communications Board of Directors. His official title is Deputy Chairman (he represents the families interests). He also is listed as Chairman of numerous Rogers properties. He is expected by many to named Chairman of Rogers Communications when the current chairman retires. The shakeup at Rogers Communications took place with the family's participation.

Fair enough. And yeah - Gillick couldn't wait to get the heck out of here. All the meddling was very much beneath him.

"New Rogers Boss Guy" seems like a rather shoddy title.

This is outrageous. If that's true... that MLB is pressuring Angelos to give up his GM, that would be REALLY bad... I would think there would be legal implications. The more I hear, the more I hope PA sticks to his guns. How utterly disrespectful and classless on both Toronto and MLB's part. Times like these I'm kinda glad we have a grumpy old lawyer for an owner.

Again, you'd think this would open the door to giving DD the same title and responsibility here in Baltimore. It makes so much sense.

Agree, of everything we have read to get outrageous about the the last few days ... Toronto tampering, rampant cronyism among MLB owner cliques and commissioner, penalizing the Os for the lawsuit by breaking the AL/NL rotation to give the ASG to San Diego... this is at the top of the list. If true, how can MLB possibly justify essentially choosing sides in an issue between two teams over the services of an employee?

I think as long as we stand our ground, MLB can't do anything. If we agree to let DD go but allow MLB to determine the compensation, we're pretty much screwed. As much as I wanted DD to go and just put this headache behind us, I think I now want to keep him around if anything just to prove a point.

If MLB determines compensation, the Orioles will get Kyle Drabek.

From what I've read of PA he's far too deliberate a litigator to let MLB dictate terms. I can't see him letting Duquette out of his contract if he thinks he's about to get the short end of it.

Jays required to pay in U.S. dollars.

The Blue Jays can’t be too happy about that sinking loonie of ours.

Here it is a few months before the first regular-season paycheques must be handed over to players who are paid in U.S. funds, although the revenue obtained by the team comes in Canadian currency. The dollar is floating around the 84-cent range and that is not good for the Jays.

The loonie has been on a downward spiral for weeks and there is no sign it will get much better. If the Jays were buying U.S. dollars today based on their estimated $122-million payroll for the entire season, it would cost about $151-million Canadian, although it’s unlikely the club would purchase all the money at once.

“We are not paying the players yet so the impact is not yet felt,’’ a Jays spokesman told colleague Clayton Richer. “Also I do not think that we would state what we budgeted the dollar to be at for 2015.’’

http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/01/18/toronto-blue-jays-giving-up-key-parts-to-replace-paul-beeston-would-be-madness/

If there has been one constant among Toronto sports franchises in recent decades — other than wearying mediocrity — it has been faceless predictability at the ownership level.

Corporate boards of directors tend not to do anything too exciting, lest they give shareholders the flop sweats, which is why the swirl of intrigue surrounding the Toronto Blue Jays and their president-in-limbo is so out of character.

But if it’s true that the move to replace Paul Beeston as team president is being driven by Edward Rogers, deputy chairman of Rogers Communications and controller of the family’s majority voting shares, and that discussions with the Baltimore Orioles over compensation for the services of Dan Duquette have included the possibility of blue-chip assets heading out of Toronto, then we are looking at ownership hijinks not seen around here since the Harold Ballard era.

    • Do we know what his velocity was today? I know he doesn't light up the gun but was he at his normal?
    • Longterm he’s probably that missing RH SU/MR that we’ve been looking for since the Fuji trade.  It’s probably Suarez vs Ramírez vs Tate for 1-2 bullpen spots. Wells and one of Irvin/Means could be in the bullpen mix as well.  Depth is good to have. I wouldn’t sleep on Ramirez either. Elias has shown a knack from adding relievers through trade or waivers.
    • There's not a single high level prospect on the team he pitched against tonight and even the one out he got was crushed
    • Let’s tap the brakes on his move to the bullpen. His stuff plays and he can get outs. Best of all, he doesn’t walk anyone. He challenges hitters and gets weak contact. With our defense, I’d rather him give up the occasional double or flared hit to the outfield than to see walks. Keep him in the starting rotation until he proves he doesn’t belong. Wells and Irvin both have experience in the pen and frankly for Irvin, though I love him, has a real tough time throwing strikes at times.    anyway, let’s see what the old dog can do.
    • I could see Suarez sticking in a bullpen role long term with the movement on his fastball. Also he might be able to throw a 2 to 3 more MPH harder not having to worry about trying to pitch six innings. The Orioles have done a good job finding pitchers who weren't expected to do much in recent years and it would be cool if Suarez is another find.
    • I mean, heres where we really find out if Holliday is cut out for the majors and if he has the character to fight through major adversity right off the bat right?  Saw a good point that there was a guy previously that started 4 of 55, and that was ole #8.  Mike Trout didnt get his batting average up to .200 until May 31st of his first season.  Ideal? Absolutely not.  But when the franchises all-time hits leader started with the same slump its something to pay attention to.
    • Going 1 for 25 is not hard to do. I would imagine many HS Senior players could do that if given 25 at bats in the big leagues. Not saying Holliday is not worthy, just how bad going 1 for 25 is. Had someone not been on 1st, he could be 0 for 25. I would like to see him more aggressive early in the count and more protective late in the count.
