TT: The Orioles should let Duquette walk

Yes, Hoffman is much more than I expected. That blows away the compensation the Red Sox received for Theo. I know the situations are very different but it's the only precedent I can think of. I don't mind Angelos driving a hard bargain and trying to get more but Hoffman is good enough for me.

Cubs did not tamper. Twice.

I already think Hoffman is an overpay for the Blue Jays. Asking for more blows my mind but it sounds like we are in a position to do it.

Whether the Blue Jays' behavior was clumsy or calculated, the Orioles ought to make it clear that it's not OK in either case. Hoffman plus should be painful enough to demonstrate that.

In my mind, Hoffman himself is painful enough. If they had approached Angelos in October and followed proper protocol, I don't think Hoffman would have ever been on the table. But hey, like I said, if Peter wants to push for more - more power to him.

At this point, if the Jays are unwilling to give more, do you think it's a situation that will work with Duquette continuing on as GM?

If there were no mention of tampering charges, I'd say that the Os need to be careful and pull the trigger at the right time to complete a deal and maybe that means "just" Hoffman. Keeping Dan at this point will not be ideal.

But WITH the tampering charges, I think that buys the Os more leverage and the ability to play harder ball. I also suspect the crew they are sitting opposite in this deal are a little overmatched now and afraid of who to talk to for counsel.

Going to NY and asking their advice probably seemed smart. NY probably had a good chuckle when both parties parted ways, but now that NY has been outed publicly AND now that Toronto appears to be willing to send top prospect(s) to save their bacon, I am guessing NY is mad at Toronto now too. I love Dan. If the Os can add a player of consequence to the Hoffman rumor, everyone but the Os loses here.

I would guess that MLB is also wishing the Jays would just hurry and add another player of consequence to Hoffman too.

I don't even think the Os are worried about Fanfest and the PR problem this poses. Its possible that the Jays are hoping they do though.

This is fascinating.

I agree.

The time is now. If the Jays commit to waiting until after the season, Hoffman is off the table. But then there is that whole tampering thing "in our favor."

I guess I'd be okay with Hoffman only, but only OK because I'd still be miffed about everything. Adding someone else to the deal who can be in our top 25 prospects would probably suffice my need for comfort. Adding someone who would be perceived in the top 15 would be better from the premium TOR would be paying, even though the difference is probably negligible in the end.

Seems like someone else will be added. I sure do like highly touted C prospects.

I'd be satisfied with Hoffman--he has a very high ceiling. Hoffman would accomplish three objectives: (1) giving the O's significant compesnation for the turmoil the Jays have wreaked on their front office, and (2) putting a significant dent in Toronto's talent base, and (3) making the Blue Jays look stupid.

Me too. I would much rather have Pentecost than Hoffman, actually.
