He'll be happy, comfortable - and he'll know it. You know what is unhappy? Ten years being out is unhappy.
Once he accepts the fact that he's stuck here, he'll work his ass off to be offered a better job after 2018.

Perhaps even more significantly, he'll continue to work his ass off in order to continue putting winning and/or post-season teams on the field for the previously hapless Baltimore Orioles, which will likely cement a golden legacy for himself as a career G.M. with the Expos, the Red Sox, and the Orioles.

Nay, he is big boy. He has been through this before. He will work right through it is my guess.

Yes, he has been through this before. And the last time he went through it, according to the Toronto Star:

When Montreal Expos president Claude Brochu confronted then-GM Dan Duquette with rumours that the Red Sox were pursuing the New England native to be their own general manager in January 1994, Brochu informed him he was under contract and that he would not let him go. The response from Duquette, who had taken over the Expos from Dave Dombrowski in 1991, was that if he stayed his heart may not be in it and he would not be able to do the job to the best of his abilities.

So if you believe that past experience indicates that Dan would be able to do his job effectively during and after this debacle... the above does not seem to bear that out.

1991. He was a wunderkind back then. He had not been shunned by the baseball world at that point in his life.

DD may have said that, but it likely was to convince his boss as much as anything else. Big difference between a story related by a reporter 21-years after the fact and reality today.

He's obviously forgotten that shunning. Hence his reluctance to stand by the O's and flat out deny his interest in leaving. The BJ preparing to give him a shiny new title and a huge raise helps dilute that 10 year shunning also. I don't know if he will intentionally be bad now, but if his heart isn't in it, how good can you do your job?

By being an unemotional enough guy to turn around a perpetually losing franchise in three short seasons.
