I find it interesting that he mentions Davis in RF and Matt at 1B. Would be interesting is Davis is Nick's replacement and Matt is our 1B.

I don't think that happens. I just think Buck is emphasizing the versatility he has. He likes having that versatility and it can be quite helpful when injuries pop up. I doubt you see Davis in the OF or Wieters at 1B much unless injuries become a major factor.

I think there is an above average chance it happens. There is a chance that MW's arm might not be ready for the rigors of catching early in the season and he may really be the #3 catcher early on. In any event he is likely to catch fewer games than in previous years. He may get extended ST, but not for long IMO. A guy earning $8 million and not likely to be returning next year is not worth taking a cautious approach. If he signed an extension, then that's another story. Caution would be the operative word.

I've been touting Davis as our starting RF'er for over a year. He is too good an athlete and has way too good an arm to waste at 1B.

Having said that I think he is also our best defensive 1B. We would have one the first game of the ALCS if he was there to dig out JJ's weak throw on the inning ending GB that Butler hit.

Hardy/Machado will miss him if/when he is not at 1B.

I like the versatility going into the year. Davis is a big part of that. The fact that he can play a passable third base means a lot. I imagine if Wieters isn't catching we'll see him at DH or the DL but Davis in RF still would be an option if Parmelee is hitting and playing 1B.

Hmmm...Matt has played 1 game in the majors at 1b in 2011. Nothing in the minors either. If Buck is thinking this, it will be interesting to see how spring training allows Matt to have any transition to playing 1B.

"I've got two guys' date=' without naming names, we call it the 'Jake Fox Award,' who are probably going to go down there and have an unbelievable spring training. I'm looking forward to it. But you've got to be careful. The spring and fall are the big foolers in baseball. They will fool you in a heartbeat. You've got to be careful with your evaluations."[/quote']

Which two?

My take on RF.

Right now it looks like Steve Pearce is going to be our primary RF with Delmon Young being the primary DH unless we make a move to add another OFer. I know this board has an infatuation with David Lough and would love to see him get 400 at bats for some reason, but I don't see it. My take on the RF/1B situation is that between Chris Davis and Steve Pearce, whichever player is your better RFer should be playing there with the other one at 1B since RF is the more important position to have plus defense at.

What I remember from Davis playing there in 2012 is that he was surprisingly athletic and had a good arm. His routes could have used some work, but that's to be expected when playing a new position and I'd expect would improve. I haven't seen Pearce in RF enough but he seemed adequate when playing left. I don't feel he's as athletic as Davis and Davis definitely has the better throwing arm.

"I'm not here to recruit you to Baltimore, I am here to see if you could be part of something we have that is very special."

Buck about Colby

I was hoping they'd ask more questions about how that meeting went. I'm certainly not upset that we never quite hopped aboard the Colby Train but I am curious why it didn't happen.
