I just heard on a radio interview, DD comparing him to Jose Bautista. Is that even close to a possibilty. Does Alvarez really have that kind of power potential?

Side note: Kind of ironic he compared him to a BJ.

Since Bautista never hit more than 16 homers or a 757 OPS in the majors until he was 29 years old anything is possible.

Probably not. I didn't hear the interview but maybe Duquette was referring to the entire package. Bautista has a very good right field arm and we know the O's are high on Alvarez's arm. Bautista walked more in the minors but so far (in a small sample) Alvarez has hit for average on a more consistent basis. At age 24 between AA & AAA (mainly AA), Bautista hit .280/.359/.490 (.210 ISO). At age 25 between AA & AAA, Alvarez hit .306/.330/.472 (.166 ISO).

Both guys were in AA/AAA in their mid-20's. Each had their development potentially stunted for different reasons (Bautista losing a season of development due to the Rule 5 draft while Alvarez defecting). Both have strong arms and some power (Bautista moreso than Alvarez). I am guessing those similarities were at that the crux of Duquette's comparison. I would be surprised if they have an expectation of Alvarez becoming a 40+ homerun hitter in the majors.

This is a guy I just need to see more of. With such mixed reviews from scouts and writers and the fact I have only seen some abs on my ipad and his stats, I don't know what to think. I will say that the abs I watched, which were from the AFL before last season, weren't particularly eye-popping, but maybe I was just cranky that day. I remember him showing some patience, but also being out in front of some good offspeed stuff.

At age 22 in Cuba in 2011, Alvarez hit 20 homers in 344 AB's. Jose Abreu, age 24 and Cespedes at 25, both led the league with 33. Puig, at age 20, had 17. Rusney Castillo at age 23 had 18. Alvarez was 15th in the league in slugging at .613. A Dariel Alvarez who hits his peak in MLB, is probably a player who hits around 15-25 homers, IMO.

I'd be fine with that. So basically, Alvarez will be close to what Nick Markakis was.

I'm not sure we'll ever get to see Alvarez over a full season but I don't think he's the hacker that Schoop was last season, despite the low minor league walk totals.

Alvarez doesn't walk a lot but he also doesn't strike out a lot. He is a throwback to a time before the three true outcomes era.
