I think that DD and Buck haven't answered this question because the question is premature. This is a decision that will be made late in Spring Training, IMO. As it should be. There is just no real way to know right now whether Wieters will be ready to play in April, and to what degree of readiness.

Money should not play a role in the decision. Winning should.

If Ubaldo is not better than the other five starters he goes to the pen.

If Wieters can't catch or hit well enough to DH he goes on the DL until he can.

Ubaldo starts one of the first three games and if Wieters can hit and not throw, he DHs. "When they say it is not about the money, it's about the money." Buck Showalter

Did you see what they did with Ubaldo last year? He pitched, until things got too close and ugly. Late in the season. He won the division clinching game for us.

I really like Joseph, but I'm not really interested in him ever being our #1 catcher. Maybe he can change my mind this year, but I'm not counting on it.

I think a number of Joseph supporters are going to be disappointed this year.

So Markakis performed in 2013? Is that what you would call it? Or are you considering the two games he didn't get in Buck sitting him?

I guarantee you 30 teams would take the defense Joseph brought last year with 15 to 20 HR potential out of their starting catcher.

As for Wieters, I am on board with DHing him if he is not ready to be the catcher on opening day. He can provide perfectly fine offense there. And the reason that the question hasn't been answered by Buck is I am sure they will see where his progress is in march and evaluate options then.
