If Wieters can only DH, I don't see how you can still carry Young.

I guess it would come down to whether or not you prefer the pinch hitter or the defense reserve.

I think, with De Aza on the roster and Joesph/Arencebia and Schoop in the lineup, I'd prefer the bat. However Lough is under team control beyond 2015 so that is an advantage for him--if they believe he's part of the future.

You'd have two short side platoon DHs who can't play defense at all. I don't think it would work.

Hypothetically, Joseph hits 15 homers, but maintains a slash line of .207/.264/.354. That's a valuable offensive player?

Wieters had 112 plate appearances in 2014. 112. In those plate appearances he had a .329 BABIP, his career BABIP is .285. Not only do I trust the larger sample just on principle alone, but that small sample also includes cautionary flags.

Buck values a strong defender behind the plate and Joseph provides that for now.

Then what are you doing with De Aza, Snider, and Young?

And if Lough is the 4th OF, which of these guys is he ahead of: Jones, De Aza, Snider, Pearce?

Young has no business playing in the OF.

With that said.

Buck has said he will play the guys and they will determine who plays.

We can talk on May 1st, and then we will know for sure, who the roster will be. :)

I would have Wieters on the DL if he couldn't catch.

But, even with that parameter, I don't think I follow your point about the platoons. If I keep Lough and I face a righty, may base lineup is De Aza LF, Snider RF, and Wieters DH. I'd also want to get some starts for Pearce mixed in as well. If I face a lefty, I have De Aza/Pearce in LF, Snider/Pearce in RF, and Wieters at DH.

If I keep Young over Lough, I'd have the same thing, except I'd give Young some ABs at DH and LF.

If I keep Young, I'm doing the same thing

You dont keep Young over Lough, who is above average defender in the OF.

Wieters would also be on my DL if he can't catch. However, if they insist of keeping him if he can't, he's your DH against lefties. That's Young's only role. I never want him putting on a glove. So Young would then only be on the team to pinch hit against lefties late in the game. That's not worth a 25 man spot.

Without Lough, Young is the fifth option as an outfielder.

When do you play Lough? Are you starting him over De Aza or Snider? If Young's not in the OF and Cruz isn't here, are you using him as defensive replacement? Does Pearce not make any starts against righties?

I think we both agree that keeping Wieters as a DH-only causes the team to unnecessarily lose a player, when the better option is to DL him. Even with the limited role that Delmon would have as a PH, I believe it's a more important role than what Lough brings as a fifth OFer.

But the better option is to DL Wieters and keep both.

    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
