Roch: Ubaldo Did Not Throw While A Free Agent

When this happened, I immediately disliked Jimenez. But I've been trying not to judge some of these guys by there worst moments. There are plenty of guys in the public eye that have made some poor decisions...including D. Young and Manny.

And what is his excuse for being bad in 2011 and 2012?

I haven't had high expectations for Jimenez because I've always felt that he's been a poor pitcher longer in his career than he's been a really good pitcher. He was fortunate that he became a free agent after a good couple of months at the end of the 2nd half of 2013. I recall him having some good games against some really bad teams though. Now that we have him though, I'm hoping that we can get a consistent, slightly better-than-average pitcher with some flashes of brilliance.

Or the loss of velocity that was evident until after his injury through his way of getting outs out of whack. Either.

He gave up less hits than IP. His K rate was good. His lack of command was his achilles heel. As it is every year. If his offseason workout regiment was to blame for 2014, then maybe he needs to focus more during the offseason. Because whatever he does still hasn't solved his bouts of wildness.

He was a free agent last year. He was not training until he signed his deal. I suspect there was little focus.

I remember reading about that. He was immature in those day and acted like an idiot. How he dealt with last year's issues, being demoted to the bullpen and not publically complaining, accepting that he needed help with his mechanics -- this showed maturity on his part. I read Orioles blogs, Facebook entries, and similar sites. He is still being constantly ridiculed by various Os fans on these sites. I seriously doubt that he reads all of these blogs, though I know that he's on Facebook and Twitter. But I'm sure that he's aware of what some fans think of him; they have sometimes let him know at the ballpark during games when he was struggling. Instead of complaining about fans, he has worked on his pitching -- he turned boos into wild cheers when he righted himself during the East Division clincher. Then he came to Fanfest, engaged himself with the fans, spoke about how he was going to improve himself.

As far as consistency, there is some hope that this will improve. He has shown a solid work ethic. And above all, he has solid coaching and Buck as his manager. He should have a good year and that will be great for the team.

He wasn't bad in 2011. 3.67 FIP, 22% K rate, 2.30 SO/BB, with 2/3's of his starts that year coming in Colorado is not bad at all. He didn't have a great 2011, but I wouldn't call it bad.

That's ok. He's an Oriole. So folks would day that is reason enough to bash him. There were many pitchers worse than Ubaldo last year. And he did not weigh in Thursday at 307 lbs. He strikes out a bunch of guys, does not give up homers, and has a fastball that has crazy movement.

My point is, he had the same issues as every year. I like Ubaldo and I hope he does good. I don't see though how one offseason is to blame for something that has been an issue his whole career. Hope he wins 20 this year.

I think last year, he did revert because of lack of training. We bought him because he had made a great leap. And then his lack of workout caused his mechanics to regress and he no longer had the heat to rely on. I watched him at 87 last spring. I would still rather have him than Ervin.

    • +10 defense for me. 10 runs is 10 runs. But on defense, I think there's a small, hidden bonus in there of getting pitchers off the field, keeping them healthy, and keeping them pitching with confidence.
    • I agree that I'd like to see more. I think a trade for a relief piece will happen before the deadline. When, and how big an addition it is, depends on the ripple effects of how well the Means, Bradish, and Wells recoveries go.
    • Would be nice if Cooper had something to say about Mayo’s defense.  We know he can dominate AAA offensively.  Cooper doesn’t need to tell us that.
    • Tony, I really did not intend that to be disrespectful at all. There were several other posts about Basallo's tough start and I was simply providing an alternate take that maybe it's not too much to worry about since he's so young for the level he's at. I will acknowledge "nothing to see here" and the "lol" does come off snarky, but it really was not intended as a shot in your direction specifically. It was more of a "hey let's pump the brakes". It was just strictly my opinion, and yes, my opinion is often wrong.  But I do think it's worth mentioning in the context of his rough start that he's super young for his level and coming off injury. Those are big factors. My way of delivering that thought was admittedly clumsy and reads more fanboyish and flippant than I wanted it to, so apologies there.
    • True. So any combination of guys will score runs with the same net run differential. I guess part of the game would be to construct a roster where you have players with a bunch of different skillsets, and then maximize each player's advantage depending on the situation. That is also definitely something the Orioles have done very well under Elias/Hyde.
    • I dont know if this is pertinent to the post...but I want people to see this quote about ONE of the prospects in question: " I resisted writing about Mayo last week, as he just continues to impress, week after week, and how many times can I write that he hits the ball really hard, hits it in the air, doesn't swing and miss very much and is very young? So instead, I'll just hope that he'll be up in the majors soon so I don't have to find new ways to express just how elite of a prospect he is. Jordan Westburg's emergence has perhaps clouded the immediate future for Mavo, but there's no question he's shown everything he needs to. He checks every analytical box, and hopefully the Orioles find a way to squeeze him into their major leaque roster soon. JJ Cooper, Baseball America
    • Saying all of this, if Holliday gets a hit and a walk tonight and looks comfortable, I'm not necessarily making the change. If he looks totally lost still, I would. Tonight.
